Welcome to the third in a series of discussion threads on what to order for this year's knife. Thanks for your patience and participation. I am trying to make this as democratic as possible, so everyone sees the decision process, and gets to have a say.
I am only slightly familiar with Canal Streets products, so I would like a lot of help on this one, please. We should narrow the choice down to two possible knives, in the 3 5/8" to 4 1/4" range. Post pics of what you know they make well, and state your case!!

The Canal Street patterns that I really like are the 4" serpentine jack and the 4" two blade congress. I'm sorry that I don't have pics to share. :o

I don't fancy them, springs have been far too soft for my taste. Limited range of bone it seems, mainly stainless. Not as many variants as Queen or GEC.

Many people do speak well of them though.

I have a Canal Street, a 14-4 CrMo single blade trapper. The spring is not way strong, but it is satisfactory. Good for a gents knife, maybe a bit weak for a working knife. The 14-4 CrMo is the Latrobe version of 154CM and provides quite similar properties. The fit and finish on mine are excellent.

I offer this as information only and not as a vote.

I have always admired the swell center jack and Canal Street does one that is right up there. I love the flat bolster end that can be used to tap with and the Coke bottle shape. It's 3 7/8 inches closed and available in D-2.

I've got a Fiddleback Whittler in Amber Stag Bone. The fit and finish is about on par with most Cases and like others have said the pull is a little week. All in all it's a good knife though. However, the price point is pretty close to Queen and I prefer Queen.

Unless Canal Street is willing to make a knife without the obtrusive, and in my purely subjective opinion, very unattractive CS shield, I would not be interested.:thumbdn:

Almost all knife makers that utilize a shield have ised it as a place to put their logo. Case does it on just about all their knives as does GEC. That could be something that will be voted on perhaps...

I don't know too much about CS but am open to it. If they can do good work like Queen and Case, Congress seems very nice.

The Swell Center Jack is quite a knife and comes in D2 or 440C. Pretty unique piece compared to the current market of newer knives.

I like this Moon Pie Trapper, however I agree about the CS Logo. I don't care for it...

I liked that capped jack too, but I won't buy a Canal Street with the big round shield either. Looks like a penny. I really like almost all shields, but don't care for a round one at all. Just me.

Do you have one of these? I have only ever seen this picture of the prototype.
I got to handle it at Blade last year and I really liked the knife and think it would be a great platform for us, if they are building them yet that is.
There were a few issues with the knife in this picture, like the long pull running into the swedge a little, but it was a prototype.

Can anyone post a picture of their production model?

These are the only two I care for in their catalog. The Serpentine Jack and the Serpentine Stockman.

On another forum I visit (AAPK) I was able to get in on their 2009 Forum knife.
They went with a Canal Street Serpentine stockman which I really like.

Here are the specs as presented in the initial offering.
Canal Street Cutlery manufactured 4" stockman
Swedged clip Point master blade with spey & sheepsfoot secondary blades.
Ebony covers A+ or higher
440C blades
Mirror polished on both sides
“All About Pocket Knives – 2009” etch on the mark side of the master blade
Custom AAPK nickel silver shield
18 percent nickel silver extended bolsters
Exclusive AAPK Ltd edition
Packaged in jewelers pouch and gift box
Limited lifetime Canal Street Cutlery warranty

So it seems that Canal Street can do some customizing if necessary.
I am happy with it, and the springs are pretty decent on mine. I'd give a 6 out of 10 on the pull and snap.

(These are not my pictures, they are from the original posters at the other place)

Both of the CSC's I've had (Still have one) have been '07 models (Both are Cannitlers). They weren't bad, but I didn't they were as good as the Queen or GEC I had. Also, I agree that the springs seemed on the soft side. I've only used their D2, which was excellent, so I can't comment on the others steel choices, but their other steels seem to be very good.

I do like that swell center Jack & the Trapper, but I'm not that familiar with their other patterns (Other than the Cannitler, of course, but that was the '07 BFC knife).

These three are the only Canal patterns that are not so close to Queen

1) Nice, the Serpentine frame with the extended bolsters in Jack, Stockman or Muskrat
A 4" Jack would be nice and strong
2) The swell center jack looks good and a strong design
3) As Frank said above the 1/2 Moon Trapper is not for heavy work.
But the 3 3/4" packs the same about of blade as a Case slimline!
Could they do a 1/2 Moon with a second smaller blade?

14-4 CrMo is excellent stuff, holds a very good edge
The Aberdeen Amber bone I have is almost translucent in parts, quite special

I cannot speak more highly of their customer service, they are excellent
But I have gone there too many times
We would have to be quite stringent with them about their QC

That is an awesome looking pattern, and I like the bone handles and the jigging, but the big gold shield with silver bolsters, it really spoils the lines on a knife like this. The stockman with a pen instead of that spey, and a slim shield, would be a winner to me.
