I haven't had a chance to get out for any wilderness time since late last year, when my wife had some major health issues. She is finally getting well enough that I don't feel guilty leaving her for a day, so I went for a hike today with one of my backpacking friends, and he took his wife and three kids, too. We went to South Fork at the very southern end of Sequoia NP. This is in the foothills and too hot in the summer, but today was a great day.

First, a few pictures of the general area at the start of the hike

About a mile in we came crossed a small creek

This creek has a healthy population of California Newts, and the kids were happy to find one

The rocks had a mix of bright yellow and rust-colored lichens

There weren't many ladybugs at Ladybug (wrong season) but the waterfall was going strong. First from above

Then I climbed down for this shot

We could see Homer's Nose, one day I need to climb it

We made our way further upstream, to this pool

And this is my friend with his family, we ate lunch sitting on that rock:

Looking downstream from that spot; there is a nice grove of Sequoias about 3000' above this, and you can see a few outliers of this grove standing well above the neighboring trees

A lot of the bedrock there is not the typical sierra granite. It is schist that was originally deposited as volcanic ash in a marine basin in the Triassic, and metamorphosed when the granitic intrusions formed the ancestral sierras during the Cretaceous. Note the significant folding of the layers

More views along the stream

On the way out I liked the texture of the lone incense cedar next to the alders

They all had a great time, this was a very enjoyable day for everyone.

Awesome photos! I love the long views as well as the water shots... I see stuff like that and it makes me want to jump in. Looking forward to your thread and photos from the top of Homer's Nose :D

Hey mister, save that sexy talk for the bedroom :D

Awesome pictures. All that running water is something I hardly see. Thanks!

Great Photos as ALWAYS

Thanks for taking the time to post

Best wishes for your wife

Great pics, I'd love to get down to Cali and the surrounding areas for some hiking, some of my favourite scenery down that way. Thanks for the post.

Beautiful pictures...I felt like getting down on all four and dunk my head into that water! Thanks for posting!

Those are awesome pictures...thank you for posting them. I also really like the pictures of the streams and pools. Makes me want to head outside today.

Some cool shots man, nice area! I bet lunch was interesting, cool spot but hope you weren't eating anything that would roll lol. That's some crazy color on the lichen. We have lots of lichen here but haven't seen any with those rusty colors

You wouldn't keep your head in for long. We were only a mile below the snow, and it was COLD! It makes the water in my refrigerator feel warm in comparison.

Great pics! Thank you for showing this off. Must have been a great day, for sure :)

Kind regards
Andi
