Got a day in the woods to have a little fun. Jon came with me so he may add to this post with pics also.

Here in NC we dont get many shots longer than 50 yards. Not really a need for a Bolt gun and Optic to take game. I haven't had much time with my .30-30 as I have managed to get a couple of nice AR's that has been taking up my range interest for the most part. BUT today I need to make sure I can shoot that Deer responsibly if I get a chance too :)

So.... Off We Go

This is my all intensive purposes my most favorite utility rifle for woods use in a caliber over a .22lr. That favorite gun is my Marlin Model 60......but thats another thread one of these days.

The sun was way wrong and glaring off the rear sight so my sight picture was less than optimal today. Anyways, after about 40 rounds or so today this was where we made the last shot group from.

Using the Kifaru Xray as my prone rest at a cool 41 yards I was happy. THis is a 5 shot group and will put meat in the freezer I am hoping!!!

blgoode, you brought back some good memories. My dad had a 336C & would take it groundhog hunting with my younger brother & I on our farm. We tried forever to talk him into letting us get him a .22-250 or .220 Swift, but he stuck with that .30-30 thru it all. I have witnessed him taking groundhogs @ 100-135 paces with open/iron sights. He always called it his "brush buster".
Thanks for the shots & bringing back some great memories.
Be safe.

My main problem is my eye sight. Just not what they were when I was younger and out past 20 yards everything blurs. I hate shooting with glasses too :(

Brian I share your love for the 336. Great gun, and as long as you do your part with it the .30-30 will always put meat on the table.

If you're really having trouble with the iron sights, Bushnell's banner series 1.5-4.5x scope is an option. I have truly terrible vision and put one of those on mine after reading some online reviews. It works very well, although for the last 3 years my longest shot has been 30 yards. It is an excellent low light scope and is not expensive. I think I paid about 75 for the scope and mounts a few years back.

I actually had a williams peep on mine for a while but prefer the scope now. One thing I will say is that if you go with a peep you may have to play with bead and aperature sizes before you are happy with it.

Sounds like you had a good time. The 30-30 is a fun rifle.
I've owned quite a few of them, most older Winchesters. I had one in particular that was incredibly accurate.

I always thought it was a crime :D to put a scope on a lever gun, but I suffer from the same problem you do, not being able to see as well as I use to. As much as I really like iron sights, it has gotten a lot harder to use them well.

Good luck on your hunt

good shooting with iron sights. no need for a scope on a lever gun. that being said, i do have one on mine. its a simple no zoom weaver scope that you find on a smoke pole. the only reason why it is there is bc the back iron sight is bent. still pretty accurate and the lense is wide enough for moving targets and quick picture sighting. i have done well with it.. my gun? .35 Remington (its a marlin rifle lever action).. i love lever guns
