Greetings gang,

I've been toting this sweet blacklip Jack around for a little while now and loving every minute of it. Finally got around to snapping some pics:

I find pearl really hard to shoot, but when there's this much colour happening, I'm bound to capture at least some of it.

Slippery like silk in the pocket. Appropriate for a professional. I'lll bet it feels good to open letters and cut open packages with such quality (hoping someone is looking... ;)).

That's a hellluva lot of color emanating. I see it well.

This looks lovely, very clean and neat, with gorgeous scales.

I'm curious - what's the stone under?

That IS an awesome knife Roger. The ironwood one you sold was beautiful as well. I am surprised you were willing to let it go!

That is one gorgeous knife!!! I AM going to have to have Mike make me a blacklip knife!!

What is the rock underneath the knife?

Thanks guys 'n gal. The technical term for the stone the knife is sitting in is somethingIswipedfromMurray'scoffeetable. :p

I suspect he may be able to provide a more helpful answer.

I'm usually not a fan of pearl of any sort but that is gorgeous. Do you carry it in the slip case Mike sends with his knives?

Hi David. Here is one time where I think PS adjustments have not done the image a service as it now looks very "digital" whereas the original photo looks like the knife is in "real" life.

Folks, as to the stone. This is a stone called Ammolite named in 1981 and is a rare, vividly colored, iridescent gem found exclusively in southern Alberta, Canada with the largest mine near Lethbridge, Alberta.

Ammolite is an expensive product in jewellry and in some knives mostly due to the extreme difficulty in working with the material. There are a variety of colors but the finest will have splashes of red, yellow, green, blue and because it is iridescent, it will appear differently to the viewer as the material is rotated in the light.

Here is an image of the stone I have and a knife I own made by Thomas Haslinger of Alberta

and here is the knife alone

I used to have a ring and bolo with Ammolite but both were stolen from our hotel room in Amsterdam in 2005 and I have been unable to replace them. We do have other pendants done in Ammolite and at the Toronto One of a Kind show coming up in a few weeks, the booth Creations by Loebel will be one of the most visited among the more than 800 boths at the show due to his fine creations made from Ammolite.

Hello Murray,

I know, I exaggerated deliberately... If I had the full size file and the knife
next to me the result would be much better...

I was just illustrating a point, THERE IS HARDLY EVER A DIGITAL PICTURE
THAT DOES NOT NEED A LITTLE Photoshop....

Adding a little drama by playing with the background is one way....

All the berst,

That ammolite is some nice looking stone. I was thinking it was fire opal. The ammolite looks sort of like a cross between fire agate and black opal.

Thanks for showing the pictures.

Peter

Murray - thanks for the great info and pics.

David - thanks - that does show the dramatic colour of the pearl.

morrowj - yes, those little leather pocket slip covers are simple but a great design. They add next to nothing in mass or volume, but do a good job of protecting the knife.

This one has already been put to use. Not hard use - Coop was certainly on the right track :o - but still a pleasure to have something on hand that is so beautiful and so functional as well.

Roger

I like the knife, but I also like the stone alot. I collect things like that. The folder bug is easy to catch. They are so much easier to stick in your pocket.
