During a call I made last week to a talk show, the host and I discussed the merits of MLK's birthday. I opined that it was a political sop, and many other Americans also contributed earlier and were never honored.

This weekend I happened to read an article in a magazine (I believe it was the February 2003 issue of 'Guns') detailing the fact that many people could not even ID a picture of Audie Murphy, much less knew who he was.

I'm going to call Rep. Tammy Balwin in my area. Don't let all of the initial garbage get to you. Yes, she is a very left leaning, openly lesbian representative, but very strong on Veterans' rights and other issues (like obtaining deserved medals).

I don't get choked up much. But Mr. Murphy, a CMOH winner, stated that since the war, he never got a good night's sleep ever again. He died in 1971. That means 26 years of anguish.

My wife asked the question that maybe his birthday has already been honored. If so, I never heard of it. Would anyone like to join me?

The World has become a cesspool of political correctness.
Here in Kalifornia we have the Sanchez sisters in congress who are more afraid of our own military veterans than they are about terrorists cells in the U.S.

Well, I bit the bullet and opened up who-knows-what kind of can of worms.

I called Tammy Balwin's office, and explained my position. Rather than just blow me off, I was transferred to Ms. Baldwin's Veterans' Affairs aide, who identified himself only as 'Anthony.'

I asked how I might petition Ms. Baldwin into making June 20th, Mr. Murphy's birthday, into a recognized holiday, or day of rememberance. He asked me to write a short letter, beginning with a first paragraph outlining this as a request, and sending it to her office.

I once heard that pols view the demographics of letters as "for every one letter, there are 700 people who agree."

For those who wish to help, please contact:

Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin

Suite 405
Madison, Wisconsin 53703
Madison phone number: 608-258-9800
Washington phone number: 202-225-2906

Thanks guys for letting me make this request.
