I have to say that I am a little proud of this knife as it was my idea that gave Mike the inspiration do design it. When I contacted Mike about wanting another knife from him, but wanting something with a recurve(a style he did not have), he said that he thought it was a great idea. I informed him that I did not want the blade to to long. At that point he said he would come up with something and he would send me a picture when he was done.

So here it is:
4.5" blade.
.188" thick.
8.25" overall length.
Double hollow gound Mike Norris Gator Skin damascus.(Available in other steels as well)
Canvas micarta handle.(Other handle materials available)

Tell me what you think.

I'll have to check this one out in person one of these days when I get a chance to visit Edmonton...;)

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. Harry, just let me know when you are coming to town. It would be great to talk knives and meet a fellow Bladeforums member.

The knife pictured is not the knife that I will be getting. The one pictured is one of the first he produced and he sent me a picture so that I could see what it was that I had inspired in him. I want mine to have a giraffe shinbone handle. I am also waiting to see if a new damascus steel that Mike is testing will work out. If so there is a good chance that that is the steel I will choose.

Mike is really busy right now, so I don't expect to see this knife for a while.:( Hopefully not to long though.

That's a beautiful knife, Keith. Have to be some mighty special damascus to look better than as pictured, IMO.

I'm a little curious about the thickness of the steel. So many knives in that sort of genre tend to be real hefty. 3/16ths isn't really thin, but it isn't "heavy duty" either. Do you know if it is the cost of the damascus that prompted that thickness choice? I think many knives with slimmer blades use thinner steel, but am not sure. Don't handle many customs.

I've just been reading something about how most 18th Century knives were so much thinner than what we have now. Think maybe it suggested that for awhile, the only thickness that 440C came in was 1/4", and that was "the steel" of the custom makers.

Just curious as to your thoughts on the thickness of the steel.

Bugs, I discussed blade thickness with Mike and believe me cost has no bearing on why the blade is 3/16" thick. The reason is that he wants it to be a very aggressive cutting blade, and a thinner blade will cut better. The very high grinds are also to assist in cutting. Also, this blade is stronger than it will ever need to be, so it does not need to be thicker.

It was also pointed out that 3/16" is the final thickness of the blade not the original thickness of the bar stock used.

So buddy, I hope this reasoning makes sense to you, and I hope you are doing well.

Thanks for posting that beauty Keith! The contrast in the Damascus is stunning! I sure hope Mike will have some of these at the Southeastern show. I'm looking forward to seeing his new knives in person. I think I could handle seeing Michelle again too.

Very nice knife! I had a chance to check this one out at Mike's shop a couple of weeks ago before it was finished. I love recurves!
michael :D

That really is great looking. According to Mike's website, he's not currently accepting orders. That's too bad. :(

AF, I hope you contacted Mike even though he is not taking orders. If you email him he may be able to tell you when he will start taking orders again. It will also start a rapport going.

I agree with KWM. I've E-Mailed poor Mike probably to the point of distraction, but He or Michelle have always responded and cheerfully so. I don't have one of his knives (Yet...) But hope to some day. Nice folks to deal with!:)

I would have to agree with Knife Doc. Mike and Michelle are great folks. Mike makes amazing knives and Michelle is very charming and a delight to meet in person. She put us at ease right away.

Hope you do AF, you will be more than glad that you did. Mike is hard to get on the phone but don't give up. Michelle is great to talk to and very helpful.

I'm a new guy here and can say I totally agree with all the positive post about Mike. He has answered my email and been very helpful even though he isn't taking any more orders for a while.

Can't wait to see his stuff in person at the show and pick up my Overlord! :D
