Looking through my trade roll, I found a Schatt&Morgan teardrop jack with purple bone handles. Not being a fan of the color, I was going to trade for something I liked. But then I thought of old Oupa, and his great embellishment work, so I shipped it off across the BIG pond, to OZ to see what might return.
And then the heat and drought struck over there, with bushfire smoking our hero out of his shop!! Breathing smoke and fire is no way to work on knives, but they provided some inspiration, and lo and behold, after things cooled down, a knife was reborn:D !

Wow! That is way cool...and way hot at the same time. Very creative.

"so we tanned his hide when he died Clyde, and that's it sittin' in the shed..."

Don't know where that came from. That knife has strange powers now. ;)

The idea is that the handle depicts a bushfire burning with some smoky haze in the air - well, that is the way I see it anyway.
The handle material is G10.
Not the sort of handle color you will have difficulty seeing, even if you drop your knife in long grass! :D

hey i am wondering how the design on the blade is made...is it a stenciled on patina or some kind of other coating?

I draw the design free-hand using a Dremel tool with a hardened steel cutting tip, every one I do is thus one-of-a-kind.
I call it my "flaming edge" design.

SuhWEET! Very nice and great as usual. Nice execution of a natural inspiration.

Dirk, I'd love to see an element series with your interpretations of fire, water, earth and wind. Maybe even the fifth element, spirit. Would something like that call for the same knife for each or would that work better with each pattern picked as part of the element? Interesting. Maybe one of you fellows out there would want to commission that from Dirk, (wish I could) then show us how it all comes out. ;)

Anyway, really nice piece.

I did one with the four seasons once.....on an old table knife blade!

I would take a nice gnarly bit of wood and make desk sets from them.
Like this one.

Waoo, huh, HO Charilie!. Unreal and real all at the same time and place! What a neat little work of art.. And on G-10.. Who new G-10 could be made to look so fantastic. I love the theme and Dirks fine execution of that theme. Is the bail an addition by the Oupa outback shop as well??

Yep; Oupa bailed on that knife:p ! I will add a "fiery" lanyard of some kind! I can't wait to get it in my errr... hot little hands:eek: !:D

Pretty darn nice results from just an old table knife! Beautiful as usual. I'm thinking if anyone can make a silk purse from a sow's ear, it would be you.

I'll go along with SunnyD. Pretty amazing look from G10. I've not been much attracted to it aesthetically, but that just looks good.

Btw, I think Charlie is developing a new addiction - to Oupafied knives. ;)

I have a couple of his harness jacks here and he is in for a surprise.......
