I have been looking for awhile at getting a small, forged fixed blade for next hunting season. My searching led me to Terry Primos' site. I liked what I saw and ordered up a drop point hunter immediately. Nothing fancy, just his standard user fare with the exception of Corby's instead of pins to secure the handle.

The first thing that grabbed me when I unpacked the knife was the very bold etched temper line. The blade has a very fine hand rubbed finish. A truly stunning looking blade. It has a 4" forged 1084 blade (3/16" at the guard) with a nice distal taper, fully flat ground with a very fine convex edge. Terry has a tutorial on his site concerning solderless guards. You can rest assured that he knows a thing or two about fitting a guard. The joint is barely visible, but is sealed up with JB Weld to prevent any problems from arising. The handle is of mortised tang construction using maroon linen Micarta. Fit and finish is superb with a seamless joining of the slabs as well as to the guard.

The flat grind combined with the distal taper keeps blade weight to a minimum. Balance is perfect for this type of knife, it sits perfectly on your finger just behind the guard. The knife just disappears in your hand during use. The handle provides a comfortable grip in any position I tried. One area at which it really excelled was in the "edge up" position. Thumb behind the guard and the handle butt just melts into your palm. Very nice.

I expected the knife to perform superbly and I was not let down in the least. The geometry was perfect to slice through heavy cardboard with ease, provided excelllent bite into a hard maple dowel and cut meat and veggies like a great kitchen knife should. To bad I will have to wait until Fall to see how it fares in it's designed tasks :D After it's initial edge was gone, a couple swipes on the fine Sharpmaker rods and a quick strop had the edge back to hair popping in record time. The only evidence of sharpening was the faintest bright line on the edge. You just have to love this type of performance.

The knife shipped with a top quality, tooled, burgundy leather pouch sheath that matched the Micarta very nicely. All in all, a superb package that promises to get it fair share of work.

As well as I like the knife, I think I liked dealing with Terry even more. I have never had so much communication with a maker during construction. He kept me informed every step of the way and was a pleasure to chat with. He offered a lot of advise and was very receptive to my questions. Just as it should be. I definitely am looking forward to working with Terry again in the near future.

The attached photo is the one Terry sent me. My knife is the top one in the picture.

A couple of real beauties indeed. I love the etched blades. Terry makes some of the nicest knives out there and does it for reasonable prices as well.

Terry's work is ever so elegant... I love it.

It's also great to hear a customer so pleased with their purchase and service... I'm not surprised to hear it of Terry.

Put that knife to good use! :)

Thanks for sharing!
Nick

Blademan,
Once again you've impressed me with your taste in knives ;)
I'm also happy to see you wasted no time in putting the knife to task. Great review and pics. Thanks for taking the time to post!

I had the pleasure of meeting Terry at the Little Rock Custom Knife show last weekend. You can bet your booty that he is on my short list of "Gotta Have" knives! Heck of a nice guy too.

Jamie,
It was a real pleasure working with you in the creation of your knife. Thanks for the glowing review. I'm glad you like the knife, and that it is living up to your expectations. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you again.

Thanks everyone, for the kind words. You guys are keeping me busy, and I appreciate it.

Yes, thanks to all for the nice replies:)

Wulf, after going through a strong "tactical" phase and trying too
hard to dress up my pieces, I am finding myself drawn to more classic designs using simpler materials. I discovered that this type of knife is just "more me" and that I get greater pleasure out of carrying and using them without care than looking at a fancy piece and then worrying about damaging it's looks during use. Plus, I can afford to buy more pieces :D

A nice, classic piece such as this just weathers use better and will only get more attractive over time. Imperfections that develope will only add to it's character, rather than detracting from it's beauty. I seriously doubt as to whether I will ever hold the knife and say "man, this was once a beautiful knife". It always will be, and the memories gathered over many years of use will only amplify this feeling.
