I got his book, and I really like it. I would like to know how to throw a knife for self defense, should the need ever arise. I havent really thrown much before, and I don't have the long heavy type knife he suggested. Before I go out and get one, I wanted to know if it was worth it. Carrying around multiple large knives for self defense is illegal(here) and impractical(for me). I don't mind learning on one, if later on I'd be able to throw smaller edc knives(my edc knives are average length fixed blades) in the same method. Can you throw any type of knife using his method, not just large specialy balanced ones? I thought he threw a variety of things in his demo videos, but I could be wrong. Thanks guys.

i never tried smaller knives than 8inches with his technique. I imagine it would be difficult with smaller knives with little mass...

But my advice to you is to learn ralph's way with recommended knives 1st and master the throwing technique. After that, you can try smaller knives. Who knows, you might be able to throw smaller knives fairly well...

Start with big knives, then go small

Do you always need to weight it with tape? Or is that just to make it easier when you begin? The knives I'd like to use would be about 8 inches. Though I did just get a CRKT Sting that feels pretty heavy and might be throwable.

The tape and the big knives are to make it easier when you are beginning. Later you will be able to throw just about anything, even some pocketknives. If they want to experiment cheaply, I generally tell people to buy one of those cheap Pakistani decorative swords and break the tang out of it to make one really big knife, or better, cut it in two and make two.

I'm glad to hear you like my book. My video is now done, though I have been busy with other things and haven't yet made much of an effort to make it available on a mass scale. It has updated info from the time I made the book and works great in conjunction with the book, I think. If you would like a copy shoot me an email at eralphthorn@yahoo.com and we'll work something out. I've been retailing them cheap as an "introductory offer".

That is a good thrower but not really a bayonet, more of a spike. If you want good cheap bayos go here: http://eknifeworks.com/webapp/eCommerce/main_front.jsp
and search for "bayonets". I have been using the Spanish Mauser bayo's without any tape. I use the barrel ring to insert my index finger into for Ralphs' method and they are handle heavy as needed. I am getting better with Ralphs' method but still do much better using the spin method I am used to. Just need more practice:)

Wow, those are really cheap. Are they reproductions? For that price they must be, a german WWII era bayonet must go for more than $15, right?

There were many more Bayos than rifles made. I am not sure of their vintage but they bear the Toledo INI stamp and logo. They are all pin constructed and difficult to disassemble. Re-assembly is not always possible without specific tools. The price is actually 3 for 15.99 plus shipping. $6 I think. I have always had excellent service from them. They do not send e-mail confirmation or tracking # but will send it USPS priority for $6 for orders under $25. I have never had an item arrive more than 3 or 4 days after shipping.

They are actually Spanish made bayos for German mausers.

Thanks for the info, I'll order a few when I get paid next week. I was thinking of getting the mauser and the sig for $15, is the sig good for throwing? I just dont want to end up with 3 of the same if I dont like it, but maybe I'll get those anyway, if I like them then I'll have three. There's too many choices.

The Sigs work well and are easy to take down and re-assemble. They are also a little longer and will give you more insight to throwing different length objects. They may require more tweaking as they are not as handle heavy as the Mausers.

Good Luck!!
