I just recently ran across this 301 with a date stamp from 2000 and signed by Chuck Buck in '01. So far so good, but the blades on this one seem to be, if not a mirror finish, at least polished to some extent. I've compared it to every other 301 I have (a small sample to be sure) and it's the only one having even close to a polished look to the blades.

Do you have any input on this one?

I think they made some of the single blade 301 with extra shiney blades as well, not to be confused with the 302s...

I have a polished 303 as described by Tin. As some know, I do not collect all date codes on all models. I stopped in 90 on all but the 303 and special issues.

My 2000 303 does appear to be special finished. The previous and following years appear different.

Does anyone know why that year was done special ? Sometimes Buck tries different offerings like this to test sales or other items of interest . DM

I just checked the few 303's that I have and sure enough I have one from the same year as the 301 in question. It does look more polished than any of the others, but still not to the extent of the 301.

I have a 303 dated '97 that has mirror polished blades.
Not sure if that helps anything.

Not a 300 series but I just got a 501 brand new '98 and it has that same pollish. None of my other 501's have it including two customs. ???

St8, When the 501 first came out in 1975 it was mirror polished throughout, blade, bolsters, liners and all. This continued until 1986. With the date code knives Buck started to sand them and this finish continues still today for this model. So, yes your 98 mfg. is different but these guys 301's and 303's have never been mfg. with a polished part. DM

Well on fruther thought,

Wasn't 2000 the year that Buck experimented with having the factory made parts for the four 300 models assembled just over the border in Mexico ? That lasted just one year. In the late 90's the finish was called: 'tumble polished or brushed'.

If that was the case on the remote assembly then they got a little extra polish down south. My notes says this was only identified on the box. Guess we need Mr. Jeff Hubbard to comment when he can. The photo below is of four 303 pen blades, my reasoning as all the knives were not MIB the pen blade would be the least mared from use.
Lighting is tricky. 300

I sent in a new 501 a few months ago to Buck to repair side to side play. When I received it back from the factory it was repaired and the blade had been ploished to the mirror finish shown here. I suppose that the person who repaired the knife also polished the blade? It was a nice suprise and took it as thank you from Buck for being one of their customers.
