I've been working my way back into the world of shaving with a safety razor, and have a massive sample pack of blades. Considering all the good information I've seen from here, I figure I might be able to do a favor for a forumite who likes the good old double-edge.

So, the contest. Open to the USA members only, unfortunately- the cost of shipping anything overseas is prohibitive. All I ask for your entry is the answer to two questions. I'm a medical student, so the question is from there.

1. What is the worst experience you've ever had in the hands of a physician, regarding professionalism, mistakes, and so on?

2. What is the best experience you've ever had with a physician?

The prize? A set of single blades.

Derby Extra, Iridium Super, Merkur Super Platinum, Gillette 7 O'Clock, and Dorco Platinum. 5 good blades, uncommon to find in stores.

Your cheeks will thank you. :) Contest runs to 3/7/10 at 2200, post is entry number, number drawn by random.org.

1. On or about 2/3/98 a surgeon put my broken pelvis back together with a stainless steel plate and 25 screws. Unfortuneately he left a surgical tool in me which caused an abcess [ the DRS thought it was a hernia until they went in.. ] [in my groin ] which another Doctor fixed March 2, 2009. The tool left in me back in 1998 slid out my rear end while they were all doing their work !!! SURPRISE !!! I get the bill for 60M bucks to pay the piper for their abscent minded orthapedic surgeon.
2. Exactly two years to the day before this I had a heck of a pain in my side. The DRS found my gall bladder had been eaten up by gangrene which had then started having my liver for dinner and had eaten up 20% of it. DR Green came out, found my wife in the waiting room, told her and his team would do their best but it was in all probability too late and I was a goner. HA !!! That was the forth time I beat the grim reaper in that hospital not to even count the 45ACP slug that had bounced off my forehead and went up through a roof built of 2x4's above my head.

If you would be so kind, do NOT enter me in any drawing or contest as I do NOT accept freebies of any kind at any time for anything.

Very interesting idea.
My worst experience with a physician? Actually it was a series of Doc's. I had pains in my right rib cage of and on for twenty years. My family doctor diagnosed it as pleurisy and gave me pain killers for it. Several other Docs diagnosed it the same way and treated it with pain killers. After many years of this, I started looking into other possibilities. The most logical being gall bladder. I had my family Dr(a different one) check this out and after running tests he and a specialist he had sent me to agreed that "while your gall bladder is not working properly and the test we ran did cause the same type of pain you are experiencing, we feel that your problem is related to ulcers".
After another year of this and some of the worst pain I have ever experienced, I checked myself into the hospital. The same Docs ran the same tests and decided that my gall bladder needed to come out immediately. Had they listened to me and removed it a year earlier they would have saved me a ton of pain and my insurance would have covered the surgery. Since they had done the tests, found a problem and not done the surgery, the insurance company claimed it was a pre-existing condition and would not pay.

My best experience. I was experiencing sharp pains in my right side. I went to the emergency room (I was 3000 miles from home at the time by the way) and the Doc assumed it was ulcers again. They gave me a cocktail of meds and sent me on my way.
I could not get rid of the pain, over night it had moved to my back and I couldn't sleep let alone move. I went back to the emergency room in the morning and saw another Doc. He ran a CT scan and Xrays. He could find nothing wrong but didn't let that stop him.
He told me he could not find my appendix but he knew I was having an appendicitis. He sent me to a neaby hospital and they immediately prepped me for surgery. The sugeon had to really look to find my appendix as it was hidden behind some plates that my body had built around it. It was sticking straight out the back and causing the back pain and was about to burst.
The Doc that had the guts to say "I can't find it but I know this is the problem" saved my life.

Lesson learned. Don't assume a problem is what the books say it is. The human body is an extremely complex machine and no two are exactly the same. Keep an open mind.

well... let's have a go at this.

1: I've never really had a bad experience with a doctor, but I've had horrible experiences with trying to get to a doctor. My example: In January 2002 I dislocated my left elbow, shattered the ends of the bones and tore the ligaments from both sides. The doctor I had was great and even without any therapy, I regained 98% of the range of motion and strength.

But the doctor said "don't be surprised if you start having pain issues in a few years.

Guess what? I have pain issues and there isn't a doctor around who will prescribe the pain killers that I know I need to a new patient. And there are also no doctors who will accept new patients.

I realize that there are drug seekers out there, but the doctor takes an oath to do no harm. If you refuse to prescribe drugs that someone truly needs because you're afraid they may be a drug seeker, you're doing harm.

2: The best experience would come from the above. The doctor who put my elbow back together was great. One of the nicest people I've ever met and explained the whole process of the surgery in as much detail as I wanted to hear.

Unfortunately, he retired.

There's my stories.

Ooooo very interesting :)
My worst experience would have to be with my psychiatrist. He had prescribed me medications that counteracted each other and made my problems worse. He also messed up things for my father as well. Needless to say if we had the money we would sue him.

Best experience would have to be the kind im getting right now from my doctors here at school. They are all willing to listen to me and express their opinions.

Hi,

Worst experience with a Doctor? Twenty six years ago when I showed up a the E.R.with a fever and severe abdominal pain. They kept me in the hospital for three days running tests until my appendix ruptured while on the way to yet another test. Bloody near killed me according to the Surgeon who fix me. On the upside, the morphine was awesome and I got a great scar.

My best experience? Data privacy says I can't share. But most Doc's I get to be around are not only good at what they do, but are also a blast to be around.

I haven't shaved with a safety razor for decades, but I might have to give it a try again.

1) No bad experiences. I'm fortunate to be able to say that in 60 years I've had little need to see medical professionals - a few tests and procedures to check things out, which turned out OK. Other than that, just routine physicals.

2) Best experience with a doctor was when he repaired my thumb. I had my hand where it shouldn't have been - messing around with an overhead door. These things have some pretty powerful spring tension on them, and I did something wrong that released that tension. A little square headed bolt spun around at what seems like 100 mph and tore a hole in my thumb down to the bone. Not pretty. The doc put it back together pretty darn well considering what he had to work with. I've got probably 90% range of motion with it, and it only hurts when the weather is just right (or is it wrong?). ;)

Best wishes in med school!

I had pretty much the EXACT same experience in 1982. I wound up with peritonitis throughout my abdominal cavity and was within a couple hours of death when they finally figured it out.

P.S. Please DO NOT put me down for the contest. I tried a safety razor for about a week when I was in my early 20s and didn't care for it at all. Give it to someone who will use it, I'm happy with my Schick Quattro.

Your wish is my command. I'd encourage you to try again at some point, but no pressure. :)

Next time I'm in Vegas I might go by the Art of Shaving store and have one of the barbers show me how to use one so I actually get a close shave WITHOUT razor burn.

I have had experiences bad and good with doctors...I suppose everyone has...no entry for me but I leave ya a smile...

A peach / Looks good / With lots of fuzz / But man's no peach / And never wuz / Burma-Shave!

Never mind the worst experience;) The best was when the doctor said, "there's 300 ml of urine already, your sister's kidney is working" as I awoke from the transplant. I immediately asked when it was going to be mine:D to which the reply was "I think it's pretty much yours now" That was 14 years ago

Don't enter me please. I've got plenty!

I'll have to pass on this one, as I already have plenty of razor blades, but I just wanted to say that those Derby razors are absolutely wonderful. Each blade is wrapped individually with wax paper and the edges are nice and sharp. A real bargain when compared to Merkur. Picked up a pack of 100 Derby safety razors, a nice stainless steel safety razor, and a badger hair brush, and I'm pretty much good to go for at the very least two years.

Thankfully it has been probably close to twenty years since I have had to see a doctor, so I don't really have a story to tell.
I do however shave with a double edge safety razor. I also break out a few old straight razors from time to time.
I use Personna blades in my razor because they are the only brand I can find locally that are any good. I will never use disposeable razors if I have a choice.
I would love to try some different brands, but if not having a medical story DQ's me then I understand.
Glad to hear there are other people like me who enjoy the simple pleasures of life that most folks don't get to experience these days.

While you guys are looking, if you haven't tried DE razors ever or lately, you gotta try it:thumbup: They go so well with the "folksy" slipjoint kind of guys:D

I ran on to some posts in the grooming sub forum and got hooked;) Thanks a lot STeven:thumbup:

Ah, you're in. :)

About a year ago, I got the flu. I was a mess from throwing up. Then I got a migraine. Because of the nausea, I couldn't keep my headache pills down. My wife packed me up and took me to the ER. My temp was 102. So, in the heart of winter, I shivered the whole way to the ER, only to be stripped and placed in a cold little room wearing only a gown with a killer migraine. I lay there shaking uncontrollably for two hours. I'm not overstating the matter when I say that it felt like torture that would never end. Eventually somebody gave me a shot to take the headache away and then they sent me out into the cold of night. God bless them, but they won't see me again unless I'm dying.

When he told me, "You know, you're only just now 40. I think we'll skip that other exam for another year.

Oh, but don't enter me. Me grow beard, like God intended. :)
