If this is the wrong place I'm sorry. Please move it to the right forum.

My friend just got a 12 guage Winchester shotgun from his grand dad. It is a barrel pump. To cock it you grab the barrel and pull it towards yourself. That is the best way I know to describe it. I'm sorry I don't have a picture or a model number but I didn't get to look at it that long. If any of you know anything about it I would be very appreciative for any information. Thank you in advance.

Gadgets & Gear probably would have been better.

Anyway, what you saw was probably one of the Winchester long recoil shotgun made on the Browning design that was used by Winchester , Remington , Browning and others. The Browning Auto-5 is a modern example. The barrel slides into the receiver when fired and operates the action. There should be a small handle on the bolt to open the action. It was not designed so that the barrel could be pushed back manually to operate the action. It won't work that way.

Moved from Community Center to Gadgets & Gear.

You could have read a few of the forum instructions to find the right place to post this. The Community Center stickies are very clear about this sort of thing and it saves the mods unnecessary work.

It probably looked like this.

I can't remember the model number, but I do remember a seeing a Winchester semi-auto that had a knurled section on the barrel for cocking the action.

I'll do some research and see if I can find anything on it.

I'm sorry Esav. That was it UffDa. The handle on the bolt is missing. Does anybody know what the screw on the back is for? Once again thanks guys.

There are so many screws in those things that it's hard to know what any of them are for. If it's a thumb screw, it's a take down screw.

There isn't a whole lot to tell. The first model was called the 1911, then 11 and finally Model 40. None of them were very successful. It appears that it is basically a John Browning design, but Browning left Winchester and went to Remington. There is more to the story, but it has nothing to do with Winchester.
