Aaron Frederick Custom "Problem"?

Hey guys i just bought an Aaron Frederick custom folder and everything is exquisite of course there's one glaring "flaw", the liner lock doesn't lock 90% of the time!

in order to get it to lock (pass a mild spine whack on the palm of my hand) i have to 'slam' the blade open. it seems as though the tolerances were so tight that the liner and blade tang barely engage. is this a problem worth sending back for, or is it simply letting the knife wear in???

this is my first custom and already i'm disappointed. all that money and it doesn't even lock without effort :(

any advice???

Send it back.

Bad lock = no lock = POS paperweight.

Even if you got it as a "collector" item, it will be worthless down the road if it is not built properly. Any decent maker will re-work it at their cost, including shipping both ways.

Well the knife wasn't bought directly from him but a dealer. Is there a chance that it's just the liner needing to wear in? i mean it locks up just not as much as i'd like and with some effort involved.

It's usually best if you contact the maker, custom or production, in regards to a problem before you post it here.

If you don't get good customer service, then "air the dirty laundry" here.

I know Aaron, he will make it right! He is John W Smith's son-in-law and they both have the highest standards. I dont have access right now but if you dont find his email or phone number by tonight when I get home I'll send it to you.

Thanks everybody. After playing with it a bit more it seems to be getting better. I'll see how it is after a few more days. It truly is a beat though...

If it doesn't work perfectly very soon, please contact him. He'll feel much better knowing you care enough to have him get it right.

Meanwhile, sometimes a problem liner lock can be helped along by rubbing the points of contact on liner and tang with the tip of a pencil lead. The graphite will provide just enough lubrication to smooth the action.
