Adding a nail nick to SAK blade

Hi STR,
Wondering if you can give some advice on adding a nail nick to a SAK blade? I have a SAK that was modified, and now the nail nick is covered by other tools. Is it possible to add a nail nick to the other side of the blade? What is the best way to do this and is this something that you do?
Thanks,
Nick

I usually just took a cut off disc that was nice and thin for a mandrel and dremmel and took my time slowly letting it do the work to cut in a notch that my nail would fit in. Then I'd take a small cone shaped burr to shape it under the notch. Sometimes I'd just use the disc to cut clear through and make like a "Scagel" opening slot instead. With a notch already in it on the other side it may be hard to keep from going clear through depending on how deep it is now.

Hard to describe. If you look at the before and after pics of this old WhittleJack I made for my friend Dirk you can see the nail nick I did on it for him. I can't say its the right way to do it but I never much liked the well traveled roads I always kinda made my own paths and took the road less traveled so to speak. Unique was what I was shooting for rather the same ole same ole.

Somewhere I have a scan of an old slip joint I made many many years ago that I cut the notch all the way through. If I can find it I'll post it. If you want the same looking kind of notch as whats on it I'd probably recommend you ask one of the slip joint makers. Not sure who to refer you to though. Maybe one that would be quick about getting back to you but right now with blade show around the corner that may be a tall order to fill.

Nick here are some other ideas for you to consider. I did my first one using the Erickson trick today and it worked fairly well. Fortunately I was able to clean it up with my gator belts afterwards but if done adding to an existing blade already polished I fear it would probably scratch it up in places you didn't want it to. Still it beat the heck out of the way I had been doing it by hand with a dremmel I'll tell ya that!

Hi STR,
Thanks for the info. Sounds like this is something I am not willing to try myself, though. Are you interested in adding a nail nick to my knife? The blade in question is a Victorinox Electrician blade. The knife has been modified, so the nail nick is now covered by other tools so I would need a nail nick added to the other side of the blade. So it would be that blade there only on the other side?

Yeah I'll do it. May not be as spit shined as if you had someone else do it since I rarely do them but I'll certainly put something on there for you that your thumb nail can get hold of if you like.

Yes - that is correct.
The side with the nail nick is now covered by the large/main blade due to a custom tool configuration.

I don't care if the new nail nick is perfect - as long as it works. Whatever you think is best is fine.

I will print out the work form and send the knife out to you in the next few days. Email sent also.

Thanks,
Nick

I recieved your SAK today in the mail. Its done and on the way home.

Thanks

Thanks STR!
When I get the knife back, I plan to sharpen the blades and put it right into EDC, probably alongside my Spyderco Salt SE that you modified to pointy-tip.
Thanks again,
Nick
