I got my newest AG Russell catalog yesterday, and immediately was drawn to the new versions of the Deerhunter and the Bird & Trout knives with VG10 and D2 blades. Has anybody received theirs and had a chance to try them out? I can tell you, I just gotta have one of the VG10 Bird & Trout knives. Looks like a cutting and slicing machine!

I am with you on that one! I posted a review request in a few places a day or two ago and have not gotten a hit though.

Looks like I'll just have to get one and try it out for myself, sigh....;)

Nice thing is that my oldest daughter saw it on the computer when I was drooling over the picture and said, "Wow, that looks like a great knife. I want one too." Well, she's 6 going on 16 so we'll see, but I could go ahead and get her the cheaper one in AUS8A and it wouldn't be so bad watching her abuse it during the learning curve.:D

I have their #4 boat knife in stainless steel...I like the design of the knife as well as the sheath with the flap & stud closure but I found that it does not hold it's edge. Actually I found it's edge holding ability to be very poor. This was the same knife issued to the Canadian Military as a general purpose knife...I recall that no one really found the blade to be very good. Maybe their carbon steel blades are better.

Good luck with your knife shopping!

Oops! I just checked and I think it's a different Russel! The knife I have is from Grohman Cutlery and it has Russel stamped on the blade. I don't recommend the one I have.

Sorry about the confusion

Collector..
May be some difference in heat treat. I have the #3 Boat knife in SS. No sharpening or edge retention problems here. I,v even did a bit of baton work with it, with no ill effects. My only issue is, I'd like to have a flat ground one too.

Hey!! you mean this isn't ???? Aawwhh forget it!!:D
Actually I, too am curious about the A.G Russell B&T, and Deer Hunter
Does anyone know the blade thickness??

Just going from memory, I think the catalog lists the deer hunter as a 0.08" blade and the B&T as a 0.06" blade in thickness. But my memory may be flawed.

Nope, your memory is correct. A 1/8" (.125") blade seems huge and thick compared to the Deerhunter.

I haven't handled the Bird & Trout, but the Deerhunter is my favorite production light camp knife. I love everything about it: thin high-performing blade, secure & comfortable handle, great dangler sheath system.

A quick math check is due on the dimensions being used in this thread. The dimensions of the blade spine thicknesses are probably 0.06" and 0.08", not 0.6" and 0.8" thick. A 0.6" thick blade is over half an inch thick. As Joe says, a 1/8" thick blade would appear massively thick compared to a 0.06" blade (a touch under 1/16"), being basically twice as thick. 1/8" = 0.125 and 1/16" = 0.0625"

Lacking the missing zero, we would have a short little blade like the Russell knives being discussed that is AS THICK AS A KHUKRI! ;)

That being said, the AG Russell DH and B&T do look like very nice slicing little blades. As noted, he does know how to design a using knife. :) I appreciate that they come in a few different decent steels, thereby offering the customer alternatives.

BAH HAH! Yep, I meant to add the zero but was in a hurry. That's what I get for not proof reading. Thanks RJ
