I love blades of all sizes and shapes, but there's a part of me that really loves a big ol' knife. I finally made one out of 0-1 and it's about 16-inches long. I just got done heat-treating it, and now it gets it's finishing grinds to even up and straigten everything. After that, it gets sharpened and I'm going to do some serious chopping to make sure it performs before it gets a handle.

It's pictured next to my Raven for size comparison (the Simonich just got oiled last night, thus the "wet" look.)

Let me know what you think -- I know it's unfinished, but I got excited and did some "premature" posting. :D

Thanks -- I just got done grinding down the bevels and giving her a sharpening (usually don't do this before handling, but I wanted to make sure everything was how I wanted). I did some serious chopping on a treated 4x4 and it came out still able to toss arm hairs left and right. Time for some careful hand sanding. :D

 Wicked, Hurry up and finish that thing. Final finish is when I shine like a lump a coal. I love to grind/forge and heat treat but I hate guards and handles. Nice looking job, cant wait to see the finished product.

 Holy Guacamole! That sucker looks pretty nice!

Make sure you bring that one to Kansas City next weekend; I wanna drool all over that one. :)

You have got good cause to be excited. That is a wripper. I bet it would have a nice sweet spot on it for chopping branches.

"Good and familiar"

Is there another blade out there like it? Let me know before I finish this puppy!

Actually there are hundreds of blades styled like that out there. About three years ago I did one very close, only it had finger grooves and a single guard. I have four in the works that are recurved right now. NO ONE has a claim to a recurve style blade as they have been made for centuries.
Not too worry if yours comes out sweet as it looks, you will have a right fine piece!:D

Damn, I knew I was forgetting something. :D

whoo (as I wipe my brow), I thought there was one out there right now just like it. You never know sometimes.

Thanks for the comments everyone -- I'll be doing some hand-sanding tonight. :grumpy: ;)

I agree with those guys! It should make one heck of a camp knife, too. I really like the preportion, too. The belly is in the perfect spot, and it should have the balance just where you want for a chop cut. You are better than you thought, fella. Yep, I'd sure like to see it when you are finshed, if you would be so kind as to post a pic.

Even in its unfinished stage, it looks good. I am sure when it is really completed, it will be quite a beauty.

Keep up the good work, Michael. :)

The handles will just be embellishment on that one ! A mighty good looking one too. A real magnum sized piece. I just wonder, how thick was the stock ? Jason.

The stock is 1/4 -inch 0-1. Nice and hefty :D.

Sanded it down to 1500 yesterday and accidentally bought some Devcon 5-minute epoxy. I don't think I'll ever do that again. Everything that could go wrong did. Even ended up hammering a finger and ripping off some skin. After that, I forgot about it and was trying to scrub off the epoxy with some acetone. I howled like a kicked kitten. :D

Long story short -- The micarta got ripped off, and I will be rehandling the blade tonight. ;)

"Howled like a kicked kitten" :D I've been there, done that with the epoxy. Even the 30 minute kind gives me fits, as I am still hurrying all over the place. It just seems like, everything that can go wrong, will go wrong when I'm epoxying stuff. :)
