I haven't seen any comments or reviews on these unreal knives. I know Al is no longer around, but is his work being continued? Does anybody know? His knives, both folders and fixed blades are incredible...the sharpest I have ever handled...I can vouch for that!!!!!I really like his Rambo-style survival knife.....wow!!!!

The SERE 2000 sure got a lot of press. It is an awesome knife for sure. AMK has a new CEO, I believe his name is Gary McFadden. Seems to be continuing the legacy.

What about the ulta-thin "bird" series (Eagle, Falcon, etc.) How is their strength with such thin handles?

The Al Mar SERE 2000 is really an incredible knife. I only paid $107.00 for it and it feels like a custom knife. My only problem with it is that his has a very nice high polished blade which makes me cringe everytime a put a scratch in it.

I've had my 2000 a couple of months now and can vouch for the sharpness and custom feel ( smoother opening and closing than my Sebenzas! )as well the rock-solid lockup.

RH:

I've handled the Ultra-Lite series, but don't own any. They are fine, light-duty folders, but of course they do not approach the ultimate strength of the SERE 2000, nor are they intended to. The SERE 2000 is touted as a folding survival knife and IMHO, it fills the bill very adequately.

I just jumped on the SERE bandwagon last weekend. I picked up a black Ti S2K at a gun show. It is a tank of a knife. I would say it's as tough as a Buck Strider.

Interesting post. I have seen the SERE's and I guess they just didn't look appealing enough for me, but I'll have to give one a chance. Are ther any reviews of the SERE in the Blade Mags that you know of?
Thanks,
Scott

hey guys I need help identifying a massive 16 inch bowie I found at a flea market. It has a full tang blade, wood grip and is marked w/the al mar logo as well as a series #192/200. I heard it was made by Al Mar himself. It is gorgeous w/ a nice belt sheath. Can anyone help me w/ its potential value or any other info? thanks:)

SERE 2000 gets my vote. I love the knife. Everyone I show it to wants one also! I really like the pocket clip, it lets the knife ride so low. I guess it is a little tougher to get out, but I never notice it being any slower than any of my other knives.

Love those SERE 2000's. I own two, one for my EDC, and the other a black bladed, numbered pre-production model. geegee

Thanks Shootist16, great review. After reading that and all these fine comments about the SERE I had to get one from a fellow forumite. Should have it by mid next week, looking forward to testing it against a Buck Strider.

thaifight,
Check out the Bernard Levine forum. He'll be able to give you all the skinny on your big Bowie, methinks.

what about new SERE fixed blade? haven't seen any review aboout it. is it worth the money?

I've had a SERE 2000 for about six months now and really like it. The only complaint I have, as slowhand mentioned, is it is indeed difficult to draw (but it rides really low!)

The one thing I have to add is that after the SERE, the next knife on my want list was an Emerson Commander. I thought that knife had alot of promise. Now this isn't to make any Emerson fans mad, but I have to say that the quality of the SERE is by FAR superior to the Commander. The Commander had several roughly/hastily finished edges, a thin liner lock, and overall lacked the solidity and heft of the SERE. It did have a good edge and a nice blade, though. I was actually a little disappointed because I really wanted a Commander, but once I handled it I didn't see the point. I would have sooner gotten another SERE. Thankfully, Microtech stepped up and saved the day! The SOCOMs are great knives, I have 2 (an auto and a manual) and their quality is also top notch. My next purchase will be an LCC, I think.

Thaifight, assuming you did not get taken by fake, you can get for that knife new about $500, 192/200 indicates it is pre-production.

Some of the really rare version of this go for up of $2000 but those are some weird commemerative items he did.

Nice score. Be careful of the tip, they are prone to be fragile. The knife is the Alaskan Bowie if I guess right, very steep angle on the point, right?

I handled one in a a shop in Augusta, GA, while on vacation. It looked pretty plain and didn't catch my eye (probably a plus for non-concealed carry: not too threatening-looking), but the guy at the desk insisted I try holding it. I fell in love, and I'm planning on ordering one when I get money. It's got a really big handle, which I'm thinking would give you more control over a blade that size, and made me feel like I was holding a big, beautiful folder (only stronger and lighter, being a FB). Also, it had a very nice false edge that looked like it could be sharpened. Unfortunately, I can't really comment its cutting or edge-holding, having only just swung it around the store like a ninja.:D

VikingBlood, I apreciate your impressions of Al Mar Operator.however to me it looks unimpressive for "Al Mar" knife.A few of months ago when I first saw a photo new Operator I was quite disapointed with its "cheap" looks and design changes (shorther false edge). If the steel was VG-10 for example it would probably be a good purchase, but in this way (ats-34 and some cheap looking handle slabs), they're asking too much for it.
