I found a couple websites with the Al mar sere 2k for $118 and i am tempted to buy it. I will use it for common tasks, not super hard use. But first I want some opinions from people who think there are better knives for EDC in the same price range. What do you think is better as an EDC folder around that price? If you think the AM Sere 2k is the best then say that also. Thanks.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it is the best, but it is a fine knife! If you like the look and feel of the SERE2K, get it and don't worry about it.

If your unsure, explore what Benchmade, Spyderco, and Kershaw have. Benchmade is my personal favorite with the 940 series, 921 switchback, and AFCK.

...it's hard to beat the SERE 2000! I love mine; especially the edge holding of the VG-10....excellent IMHO!

I EDC an 806D2, but the VG-10 on the SERE 2K was very nice, and VG-10 takes a very crisp edge.

The SERE 2K was kind of heavy, though, felt like a brick in the pocket.

Like spheric pyramid said, it's good but heavy. I prefer to carry my Camillus EDC in most situations, although the SERE is definitely much tougher. I also find that the edge is thicker than I prefer, although it is plenty sharp. I plan to look into the Spyderco Military as a possible EDC because of it's lighter weight and flat ground blade.

Best EDC in that price range? Benchmade 710 or Benchmade 720. I'd like the SERE 2000 more if it didn't have that liner lock.

The Spyderco Military is also an INCREDIBLE value and a great EDC, ecpecially if weight is a concern. The liner lock has a great reputation for dependability on the forum.

I really liked the one I had--solid, strong, nice steel, & fit well in my hand. However, it was just a little heavier than I like for pocket carry. In that price range, I'd probably choose a 710.

I would also go for the Benchmade 710.

Overall a more convenient and useful package, in my experience.

I have the al mar, the 710 and the military and i prefer the military due to his lightweigh, but the al mar is solid as a rock :)
The military iwb is pratically invisible.
He his 20 or 30$ less than the al mar.
But if you plan to use it in front of persons he is much more impressive than the al mar

I love the Military. The fact that you can choke up on the grip for precise cutting tasks is a huge deal to me.

I have an Al Mar SERE 2000, and I LOVE that knife! (In-fact, I have another one on the way from a trade that should be here today :D). I like this one so much that it has replaced my Spyderco Police model as my EDC "defensive/offensive" folder. As far as the weight goes, this knife carries so well, that I don't find the weight to be a "problem" at-all...In-fact, the weight is somewhat reassuring, and does make this one SOLID folder. As far as the liner-lock goes, EVEN as a "lefty", I have NO problems with this lock loosening with a tight grip...(I HAD a Spyderco Military, and had to trade it off, as the lock on it WOULD loosen for me with a tight grip.).

So....My suggestion?...BUY an Al Mar SERE 2000 (or maybe even a PAIR of 'em)...You WON'T be sorry!.:).

The Sere 2k is a great knife. It's solid as a rock and comfortable in my hands in a variety of grips. My current EDC folders rotate between the Sere, a Strider AR (makes the Sere feel light) and a William Henry Evolotion. The Strider is the heaviest duty. The WH is a great "dress" knife. But I find myself carrying the Sere the most. In particular, the low profile pocket clip makes it great for urban carry.

how does the camillus dominator compare to these knives mentioned here? you can pick it up for around the same price.

I'll add to the chorus of those recommending the Military. I have a SERE 2K and it is a fantastic knife, but the Millie rides in my pocket more often. Try to handle them both if you can, before you make a decision.

MOD Trident. It might seem pricey, but you can get a slightly used one around here for $100, I bought 2 for 90 each, on separate occasion. Incredible Bargain. I like my SERE 2K, But I love the Trident because it feels every bit as rugged, but 1) it's smaller, and 2) it has a better blade:handle size ratio

I have the Military, 710 HS, and SERE. I like each one of them for different reasons and I feel that they all make good EDC knives. SO often it comes down to what you are looking to do with the knife and how the knife feels in your hand and finally the features that each has that you like or don't like. Some as they have said, really don't like or trust liner locks. If you aren't a hard use type or planning on using the knife as a personal defense blade and expect to be practicing defensive moves, I see no reason why a well fitting liner isn't safe. The 710 has the Axis lock which has it's inherent problems with the omega spring breaking at times. I also question how well the Axis lock will hold up to extremely dirty conditions that say a constructon worker or soldier in the field may encounter.

The Military is nice in the pocket as it is thinner and lighter than the SERE but the SERE is built like a tank with thick liners. All of these come is great steel choices.

Personal preference is all too often the answer to question like this. I think we give suggestion of proven, well made knives for the question poser to choose from and then it is up to him/her and their pocketbook.

Hope you find something you really enjoy.

John
