Who has not the first clue when someone comes on this forum and asks for some help finding a maker or a source for a ESEE3, or NMFSO or something akin to that (I'm not even sure the two examples I have just written are even knives).

The point is I can make a sheath for just about any knife out there, but if I don't have any idea what you are talking about, it's hard for me to respond, so I don't. It would really be good if you would state "Busse mod. no. XYZ", or "Strider mod. no CPQ" or "Rat Cutlery Little Mouse". That way I can go to the web site and find the knife and decide if I can or would make the sheath, and thereby be able to give you a meaningful answer.

I have been wondering about this for some time so I just thought I'd mention it. Thanks

Paul

Good thoughts there. :)

I'd add to the wish list that the materials that the sheath is to be made of need to be put in there somewhere. The generic: "I'm looking for a sheath" doesn't help us direct the customer to the right maker.

Generally when I'm asking about sheaths on the forum, I'm looking to see who has a particular knife on hand so that I won't have to send mine out for fitting.
I know what you mean though. It seems like a lot of people just want to be able to buy a custom sheath on ebay or something and just have it shipped to them.

Too right!! I know I would be reluctant to send out my knives, but by the same token, I would much rather have the sheath custom fitted to be 100% sure of a perfect fit and finish!
If you needed new scales on your 500 dollar knife that has custom mosaic pins, that just broke for some reason you probably would not look on ebay or the exchange for a new handle,,
Sheaths in my mind shouldnt be any different.. essssspessially when it needs to be perect, tailored to the knife itself as though it was always made to be part of the knife!

If I don't recognize the knife, I may Google it....but I too believe a picture should accompany a post of that nature.
I recently did three sheaths for Busses that the owner sent to me for fit...I was actually flattered that someone that doesn't know me would entrust them to me....it's not like I'm Paul Long or someone else as famous.....but I AM a Texican.

Well the ESEE 3 is a little tough because not everyone knows that RAT Cutlery changed their name to ESEE knives. ESEE 3 = RC-3. Same will all their blades.

Thanks, that little bit of information is welcome and valuable.

A letter/number designation of a knife has absolutely no meaning to me. I do not stock knives in order to be able to make a sheath for them. I am not a knife collector, I am a custom knife sheath maker (I assume) and will require the knife in hand in order to properly fit a sheath. I have not lost a customer's knife in over 65 years and I have every intention of maintaining that record into what future I have left. I do maintain a certain amount of patterns for a limited number of production knives that occasionally wander into my shop. As there are so many production knives available that a visual of the knife tells a lot, the alphabet soup does not bring a visual to mind unless one is a collector or familiar with that particular knife. V8 can be a vegetable drink or an engine with 8 cylinders in a V block common to a great variety of make and models of automobile---get the picture?

Exit left---smiling all the way----Sandy

Glad to help. I'm a bit of a RAT/ESEE junkie and hang out on RAT/ESEE forum the most. The name change was in part to get away from the attachment/confusion of RAT Cutlery (RC-3) and Ontarior RATs (RAT-3). Jeff announced the name change on Feb. 1 of this year.

Some people tend to forget that not everyone here is a Busse or ESEE or Bark River fan and may not even know what their models are. Especially hard when you get in to acronyms. "Got a sheath for a BRKT PSK?" Heh? :D

Helmar, I know what you mean. Hard to keep every knife on hand for sure, same with holster makers. But if you have a sample of a knife that is pretty common (e.g. RC/ESEE 3) you’d sell a lot more sheaths for that particular knife. Some people can’t or won’t send their knives out. I tend to fall in to that category.

Plus side is in each subforum there are generally several sheathmakers that hand out there and drum up a fair amount of business.

Oh, i'm so with you on this one. It annoys me to know end when people, especially grown men, abreviate everything, sacraficing clarity for brevity. It makes you sound like a teenage girl on myspace or something. I also hate "lol", "lmao" and the like; if it's not worth typing out clearly then keep it to yourself. I can't stand a breakdown in communications, especially when laziness is at the root of it.

mm....beaverballs...this is about knives and sheaths...whine and cheese is thataway!!
