First off, my name is Mike Hatfield and I am a Life Scout currently working on my Eagle project. I am building a trail 75 feet long for senior citizens. It will lead out to an observation deck overlooking a river flowing into an old mill pond. I hope to finish mid-summer.

Now onto my questions...
I don't want to spend too much money, around 100 bucks(which can get me allota knife!), on something of an EDC size.

Which do you think would be more useful...... a Mini Nessmuk (~3 inch blade) or a K6 Karda? Or are there better options?

I use my knives in the outdoors more than for indoor tasks.

I can see soooo many pro's and cons for each design and am (as Dan knows :D) on the brink of making a decision.

Thanks so much for any and all suggestions!

I hope you all have a wonderful evening! (on the east coast anyways!)

Mike

Get the Bushcraft without a sheath and have one of your leatherworking scout bros whip you up a sheath, or try it yourself:thumbup:

bushcraft knife would be great, the woodworking abilities of a scandi ground bushcraft knife alone would be nice.

Hmmmmmm.....

Might a slimmer bushcraft be a better option? I'm thinking 3/32 thick at 3.5 inches length.

It might be even better for woodworking.

From one Eagle Scout to soon to be another, congrats. Its been on every resume I've ever put out there, and its NEVER not been mentioned in interviews!

Mike and Andy,
Congrats to you both. My son is 15 and well on his way towards Eagle. We live up in the N. GA. mountains and he and 2 others in his troop hope to get their Eagle Rank together. All are looking for projects at this time.

I picked him up a skeleton fixed blade knife with a kydex sheath at the Blade Show. When we do overnight camping with the Scouts, they can not bring fixed blade knives. But when he and I camp, hunt, or just go into the Chattahoochee NF, we both have our knives.

Good Luck on your project and part of fun of your selection process for a knife will be looking at all the offerings from these fine makers.

Andy, you are most correct about the resume comment. I think it goes a long way with many employers who know that to obtain the rank of Eagle takes dedication and hard work. Two traits that are most valuable.

Add me to your list of Eagle Scouts.

I am actually in the middle of designing a small 3" blade skeletonized knife based on the bushcraft. ;)

But really, any of my knives could be made in the skeletonized form (though the kitchen knives might not be a good idea). :D

You can still get a bushcraft in O1 and micarta/cocobolo for under $100.

Congrats on your Life rank and your desire to advance to Eagle.

I was one of those procrastinators that took a year+ to finish my project and submit my papers. Don't fall into my trap!!! I do still value the eagle award, though. It is deeply satisfying to have passed through it all. I am still involved in scouting - at the varsity level....doing, guess what? Helping young men get their Eagle awards.

My project was maintaining and painting dilapodated fire hydrants around my small town. We must have done hundreds. Scouts was a BUNCH of fun. My only regret is that I never got to go to Philmont. Don't miss out on that trip!

Agreed...I did not get to go as a youth.

BUT....shhhh.....I am headed there this June/July.

You guys totally impress me with your dedication to the point of becoming Eagle Scouts.

I never had the stick to it ness. That's really cool y'all did it and went that far:thumbup:

Philmont was a great time this last summer. My only regret was being in the north country too much. It was all burned out there so an 8 mile hike without shade was bordering on insanity sometimes. I was a medium sized guy using 7 liters of water on one of those days and I still was headaching afterwards! So Dan, drink a helluva lot of water if you want to stay hydrated! Good luck!

Andy, knowing that you are an Eagle scout makes me look at your knives and find them a LOT more appealing!;) (Especially your crazy wharncliffe designs!)

Thanks for all you encouragement and knowing that I am buying a knife from a truely fantastic individual!

Mike

Thats cool bro! I'd not thought of listing it in my sig line or anything. LOL!

just added one to my sig line.

Here it is for anyone who is an Eagle:

Thanks Dan!! Done!!!:thumbup::thumbup:

I'd think Karda or full-sized bushcraft. If you shrank the Nessie down, it would end up looking somewhat like the latest karda anyway.

+1 on the eagles scout list and +1 on the don't procrastinate on wrapping up your project.

I think I'm going to go with some variant of a 3.5 inch Bushcrafter at 3/32" thick (thin!:D). I think that would create a much better slicing machine, which is exactly what I'm looking for!

What do you Bushcraft knife owners (whether it is Dan's design or not) have to say about that sort of thinness? Fiddleback?;)
