All,
This is just a quick note to recommend Daniel O'Malley's store, Bladegallery.com, to all collectors seeking to sell some high quality customs.
I have worked with Daniel and Drew now on quite a few consignments, and I am very happy with the results. The way it works is that you contact Bladegallery with the pieces you want to sell. They'll tell you whether they're interested and whether they think your expecting prices are doable. You send them the pieces and they will contact the makers to get some details on the pieces and how much it would cost today (they don't want to undermine the makers). Then they'll take pictures and put up the pieces for sale on the site with the price they decided based on input from you and the maker. Once they sell, they will get to you 80% of the price paid, minus a small sum to cover the photography.
My experience working with them on some less-than-traditional pieces has been outstanding. Even factoring their fees, etc, I've been able to get very good prices on some pieces that would otherwise have been very difficult to sell by myself. They've been very good at communicationg on knives with some problems and when necessary shipping them back to me. Working with them has helped me improve my collection by quite a bit.
The one thing to keep in mind is that this process takes much longer than a fire sale on eBay. In my experience, even in the absolute best case of a knife that only stays a few days on the site, the whole process will take a few months. So all and all, this is not a solution if you need the cash urgently.
However, for anyone with a few exceptional pieces, ones that require finding the right buyers, this is the way to go. Doing this will allow you to leverage Daniel's extensive network in the US and internationally, and will help you improve your collection.
Feel free to contact me directly if you need more details (by email please - I hate PMs).
Cheers,
JD
