Hello, been lurking here for a bit, posting only a couple times so after getting the lay of the land a bit I am posting an introduction.

I grew up hunting and fishing with my father and somewhere along the way I lost all those skills. I just turned 40 and finally decided to do something about this. I remember how much fun I had doing those sorts of things and now that I have kids of my own I don't want them to miss out. Anyway I just took up fly fishing, went out for the first time on the Deschutes here in Oregon and had a hell of a time, I can see that is going to take a ton of my time. Which reminds me I should post some pictures of that.

I also found this forum and got lots of advice about knives. At an early age I had a pocket knife and never one since then, and decided to remedy that. I bought an Izula and a Fallkniven F1, heck I am so gung ho now I even contacted ML knives for a custom.

I also signed up for a back to the basics class through PDX trackers here and it happens this weekend, I am excited to be retaught how to do all this so I can teach my kids.

Now I just need someone to go hunting with and I am set.

Anyway enough with the long introduction, just wanted to thank you all for this fabulous resource.

Shouldn't a midlife crisis involve a hot blond and a convertible and not knives and survival? I may be doing it wrong. Heh ;)

welcome to the forums TK... nice to have you here... there is a wealth of knowledge to be learned on here...:)

welcome.
cool another oregonian! those pdx tracker folks are a pretty fun and knowledgeable group. i think you will enjoy that class.
give us a report, if ya will, when yr done.

hey, you haven't lost the skills - just a need a little bit of honing ;)

you should be proud of what you're doing - across the country, recreational wilderness offices and game management offices are seeing huge drops in people spending their time camping and hunting. most studies attribute it to an increase in time spent with digital recreation - video games, movies, the internet, etc.

pass along the love of the outdoors to your kids - probably one of the greatest services you can do IMHO

hey TK THIS IS A GREAT SITE BUT U ALREADY FOUND THAT OUT OLOT OF REALLY COOL PEOPLE HERE AND THEY CONTRIBUIT ALOT OF USEFUL KNOWLODGE I ALSO HAVE LEARNED QUITE A BIT . I ALSO FISH AND SHALLOW DIVE FOR LOBTERS MY KID ENJOYS SNORKELING . HAVE A GOOD TIME WITH YOUR CLASS DONT FORGET TO TELL US ABOUT IT. MARK FROM THE KEYS

You know what is even worse, I am a wildlife biologist, well that is what I went to college for. I worked in a zoo right after college but there was way more money in computers so I sold out. I hope I haven't forgotten all I had learned, plants, animals etc and I hope it all comes back to me like riding a bike!

Welcome! There is certainly a wealth of knowledge to be learned from this excellent forum. Kick back and enjoy and feel free to post pics of your explorations, wildlife pics, gear, and what-have-you.

Mark, why are you yelling at the poor guy? :D

Welcome from a former lurker & Oregonian. There are some great folks on here and believe me, you'll need them when the kids start challenging you.... ;) I know this first hand!

Toadkiller! Hope I don't run into you when I'm in Oregon.

Just kidding. I do have a house in Sunriver so you might be nearby. I just got my first knife from ML. He does fine work.

For scale it is 6" overall with 2.5" blade.

Welcome aboard!! Have fun in your class.

I am just across the river in Vancouver.

Maybe we should plan a little get together for all of us in the neighborhood!

You will love it here

A BUCKET full of knowledge awaits you--

Just about any question you can ask-will be answered by someone who KNOWS the facts.

Welcome

Dr.Bill

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I think a gathering for the locals is a fantastic idea.
Oh I forgot to mention that after I got the izula my wife took a look at it and said she wanted one, so I got her one in pink. Always easier to feed the obsession if you get your spouse obsessed as well!

Oh and the ML knife I am interested in having made is the same one in this thread: http://www.knifeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?post/2155799/
with a darker handle maybe in redwood.

go for it! you will not regret it. matt is an amazing craftsman. he's currently working on what will be my 5th ml knife. when the $ roll in for another order its gonna be one of his hatchets. been working on him to come over to our side at bf. there are lots of members here who live with/use his knives.

Oh I went for it, just didnt tell my wife yet. Heh! He has so many orders He cant get to it till after the first of the year, argh the wait is going to kill me. But I have the design/handle and everything picked out.

Hey buddy, welcome aboard !

Ya made a great choice with the ML Knife, Matt's a great guy to deal with and his knives are awesome !

Maybe. But in six weeks, you won't feel like a fool...and you'll still have a lot of money left over.

Welcome!

So some of us get together fairly frequently, meeting most Sunday's around Noon at the EOC in Stevenson, WA (about 45 miles east of Portland), and head into the back country to play with knives, etc. :o .

All are welcome to join; "Mostly harmless!!"

Best,
