I am looking for a good backup knife for my ankle. I want something that will be comfortable and not move around alot. I considered a boot knife but it seems uncomfortable to be in my boot for 8 hours. I would like to find a nice fixed blade dagger or similar knife. Any of you experts have any ideas?

thanks

I was going to second a hideaway, although I don't own one, so I can't vouch for it yet. Seems to be THE knife for concealment right now, though. A La Griffe would be good, too, but you'd need to contact Normark for a custom sheath for it to adapt to ankle carry...

I highly recommend a Spyderco SPOT. I've owned an Emerson LaGriffe, and gave it to my sister after buying a SPOT (I own 2 now). It has the best handle ergos I've ever felt on a neck knife (it could easily be rigged for ankle carry), and is very comfortable and has a much better feel than the LaGriffe. It has been discontinued, but you can still get them (Spyderco's web-shop has them at a great price right now). Sal Glesser is also working on a new version of the SPOT with a different blade shape, but it is yet to be determined if it will go into production.

I have a couple of CS palm daggers. I have an ankle sheath for the larger one that is a perfect fit under my socks. The top of the knife just barely clears the top of standard athletic socks and the sheath practically disappears under them. The added benefit to this is that I have a longer double-eedged blade than the Hideaways or neck knives that I've seen.

The only drawback is that you'll have to have the ankle sheath custom made for the knife and your ankle.

If you're actually thinking aout wearing boots, why not have a sheath made that will fit the inside of the boot instead of your ankle? I did this with a Gerber years ago and it was much more comfortable for long-term carry than wearing it on my ankle. The sheath can be attached with velcro so that it can move from one boot to the other.

Survival Sheath Systems offers an ankle sheath system.
They have a list of knives on hand to scroll through so you do not have to send your knife in.
If they do not have it on hand you can send which ever you decide on, in to them and they will make a custom.
Their websight is http://www.survivalsheath.com/sheaths/index.htm
