This one is "The Gurkhas:The Inside Story of the World's Most Feared Soldiers" by John Parker.Emphasis, is on the British regiments, with no mention on the Indian units after Independence. There are a fair number of quotes from officers and men on their experiences.Since the book was published in 1999,it goes into the cuts and amalgamations leading to the present Royal Gurkha Rifles.Hardcover edition is around $40,with the paperback at $16(this is a real "paperback",not a "softcover";I assume the hefty price is due to the fact it comes from the UK,not being published in the US).My local bookstore couldn't get it from their distributor,so I tried Barnes & Noble and had it in 4 days.
Got the upcoming one("Imperial Warriors") on order...

I have Parker's book as well and I would have sent it to you had I known you wanted it. You are very much correct that you cant find that book over here.I found a copy in an Edinburgh book shop.I have not heard of the book "Imperial Warriors" so let us know if that book is worth ordering. Cheers!

Thanks just the same for the offer,Pipey.I believe the new book is supposed to be published in June.

Is any of the books owners in this thread interested in a book pass around like the Salsa pass around thread that's going on right now?

Or, is there anyone else that has a copy and is interested?

Salsa pass around? I really am cloistered.

Bill,

Hope everything's going ok. That western smog must make it hard to keep up with the rest of the bladeforums world... though, you do seem to have a clear and direct line of sight to Nepal... ;)

Here's the link:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=194853&highlight=salsa+pass+around

The basic premise is that a group of trusted folks all agree to pass-around some object that is prized, etc. so that more than one person can appreciate it.

A few spin-offs have started up, including passing around a sharpening video. There's now an official Sebenza pass-around going on - but this one cost $20 to join.

My suggestion was merely that we should consider circulating some of the difficult-to-find material around this forum. It would bring everybody up to speed and if the right folks are chosen, there are no problems.

In the Salsa thread, each person that got the SpyderCo Salsa got to keep it for a week and then post their review back to that same thread.

Shows you how cloistered I really am -- I thought they were trading salsas and sampling each other's recipes.

You're not alone in this, Bill. The first time I saw that thread, I went racing through the first few posts looking for the salsa recipe! :D

I absolutely love Southwestern style salsa.
I was so disappointed! :( (not a big fan of Spyderco)

Salsa...hot sauce? I used to have a basket full. I carry a bottle in every vehicle.
If you've never had El Yucateco's salsa picante Chile Habanero you are missing the very best of the habenero. The only one I'm aware of with a delicate soapy flavor...no ridiculous garlic, beautifull. Get the little bottle of green. There was a time I had to drive to the mexican barrio in So Cal to buy this. No more.

I don't have access to all the stuff I used to, but there is still nothing wrong with Mrs Renfros chile habenero's salsa, it really isn't very habernero, but is an excellect red hot salsa.

For oriental, anything with the trademark Rooster is A-Number One. For general table get Sriracha Hot chili sauce - Tuong Ot Sriracha. It is also the single best pizza add on sauce in existence today. For condiment get the Sambal Oelek. Huy Fong Foods

I have burned my tongue for many years. I hope this was of some value. I've been mellowing in my old age, and many of the newer smaller attempts in the industry, like micro breweries, I have not tried.

Wow. they have el yucateco...rates a 9. It is not all that hot. I wonder what their idea of a ten is? have to try. And there is an extra hot green from el yucateco...hmmmm
As you know, many hot sauces today are cute, almost gags, but not made for serious food. Party jokes, mostly.

OK. Munk's secret from the Yucatan: take a fresh haberno green chili. Fry it in oil they way you would a anaheim pepper for reanos (sic) take the waxy outer skin off, remove most the seeds, and mash the rest in a small saucer with several drops of lime juice. If the pepper was fresh you are in for an extrardinary experience.

Does anybody still remember the original post?

BTW, that's a great salsa site. It's unbelievable the hot stuff you can get there. Ouch!

So, are there any takers on a pass-around Gurkha book? I don't have any book to offer, but would be happy to moderate it and sign up as a participant.
