Storl sells firesteels and I picked up a bunch. I reported that the GG Firesteels had a more violent spark - and because of it I preferred LMF firesteels.

I have been practicing with the GG firesteels more and I think I have gotten the technique down to use with these firesteels. You have to use much more of the length of the firesteel - but I can now get a good fire with just wood curls.

The technique was inspired by this video:

Fast forward to about 5 minutes and 30 seconds to see how he does it. If I leave the blade firm and unmoving and only drag the firesteel - I get sparks on target a lot more often than I did the other day. If I only get curls some times - that is cool too - I just sweep those curls into my tinder bundle and use them to help things along.

I've actually been playing with them a lot and have found that the best and easiest way is to use the rod like you are whittling a stick. You can do it a lot slower than if using the spine, and tons of sparks still come off. I know that method is blasphemy for knife lovers, so I am having some little strikers made up with 1" edges.

lol where were these when i ordered a few days ago?:p

A video of the of that would be awesome storl. I've been trying to tell people to drag the steel back instead of the knife forward but I guess it took a little bit to catch on.

I had been doing this - and I had seen to comment - but there is more to it than that. The video shows exactly how he stacks his curls and how the knife moves.

IF you are having firesteel problems, take note of this piece of advise! Not only is it easier to put more friction on the steel, but it throws your sparks instead of your sparking rod.

I'll work on making a video this weekend. I have a beater knife that I can use.
