I have been a palm user for 8 years. Just got the 680 Treo! I love it.

Have been using a Treo-650 for about 2 years. It is doing exactly what I want it to do so, even though I am the world's #1 Gadget Freak, I see absolutely no reason to 'upgrade' to anything! :D

Hi All-

My company used to permit Bug Blackberry devices in the past, but they've since standardized all sales and support personnel to the Ant Treo and Termite Treo models to make it easier on technical support staff.

Just got the treo 700 2 weeks ago ---- terrific machine I like it

My wife had to replace her 600 and 650 several times due to the screen blanking out and the phone locking up. Other than that, she likes it fine.

I've been a Palm user for years, and a Treo 650 user for 14 months. I can't even imagine how I'd live without it now. Here's a list of things I do with it on a regular basis:

  • Cell phone (duh!)
  • Contact list (names, addresses, phone numbers, email, etc...)
  • Daily organizer (Datebk6 + 2Day)
  • Internet surfing
  • Reading and modifying Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents (Documents To Go)
  • Reading Adobe PDF documents (Docs To Go)
  • Send and receive email (Snapper Mail)
  • Photo viewer (Splash Photo)
  • MP3 player (Pocket Tunes)
  • TV grid listings, with 7+ days of listings, ratings, reviews, cast lineups, and the ability to add audible show reminders to my organizer (Pocket TV Browser + TV Grid Listings)
  • Weather forecaster including regional weather maps and satellite views (4Cast)
  • Time sheet, with the ability to export data to Excel (SDS Time)
  • Note taker - you can write with a stylus right on the screen, as well as add alarms (Diddlebug)
  • Memo list
  • To-Do list
  • Encrypted password organizer (SplashID)
  • Diet and exercise stuff - record your weight, daily caloric intake, and exercises, complete with nutritional and weight targets and charts (Diet & Exercise Assistant)
  • Google maps - just like the web-based version, you can view street maps or satellite/map overlays, get step-by-step driving directions, and navigate by tapping and dragging the map display
  • Directory assistant - look up phone numbers and addresses, including reverse lookups (Directory Assistant + Genius)
  • Access the entire Wikipedia online encyclopedia in seconds, automatically formatted for the Palm's screen (Quickipedia)
  • Shopping lists (Handyshopper)
  • Complete dictionary and thesaurus (BEIKS)
  • Camera
  • E-book reader (eReader)
  • Complete NLT Bible (MyBible)
  • Video and movie viewer (TCPMP)
  • Gaming - I have almost a dozen games including Bike or Die, lunar lander simulator, golf, tennis, bowling, auto racing, poker, and solitaire
  • Calculator
  • Loan calculator (Loan Calc)
  • Converter (convert any units to other units - temperature, weight, etc...)
  • Record voice memos (or record meetings)
  • PowerRun gives me the ability to run applications from the SD card
  • RSS readers - I'm trying out Resco News and Quick News to see which one I like better

In addition, here’s couple of things I’ve used in the past:
  • Streaming internet radio - choose from hundreds of stations and musical styles (Pocket Tunes)
  • Live streaming cable TV, including MSNBC, Discovery, TLC, CNBC, Fox Sports, and others - more than 25 channels total. (MobiTV)

The apps in blue are totally free. Most of the other apps are less than $15. There's lots of free and inexpensive software available for Palm OS.

I went through 3 600's in 14 months because of hardware and software issues, NO I am not a Treo user:D I am waiting with baited breath to get my hands on an I Phone to go along with my new I Mac 24"

I suffered through the resets and cr*p the first couple of months like every new Treo user (and I still get the occasional reset due to software conflicts) but now that I have my 650 set up to do almost everything I would need a laptop for, I don't even have the desire to move up to the newer models.

I have already ordered two 1Phones for my son and I to play around with, but I don't believe they will replace my Treo. The iPhone doesn't offer the same functionality and I don't think it is aimed at the hardcore Treo user. But it's going to simply ooze "gadget cool" so we're looking forward to the day they are released to the public.

(BTW, surfing a few of the Treo forums helped me a great deal in working out the bugs in my 650. Just be careful - there is one forum with really nice, helpful people and one forum with seriously nasty people.)

650 user here. LOVE IT! I was going to switch to a 680, but why? My 650 does what I want it to do;)

cockroachfarm - if you were a woman I'd kiss ya! Great link!

My wife just read this and said she might have second thoughts about me going to Atlanta this year! ;)

As I said, I have no desire to replace my Treo-650. (and this from a guy who bought a brand new Jeep one year and traded it in again, a month later, when the V8's came out! )

This is the forum where you can expect to get lots of friendly advice and no one minds if you ask a question that may have been asked once or twice before:

Great people; great source of information.

In the "other" forum, every other question may be answered with ":grumpy: :grumpy: RTFM! :grumpy: :grumpy: " (but it's a good place to lurk and learn)

cockroach what are the must have applications/hardware for the treo650? I just got my Treo 650 to work with my iGo keyboard: http://www.thinkoutside.com/products/xtbtue/stowawaybt_product.html (Only problem is that you CANNOT USE VERSMAIL with the keyboard driver loaded without the looping reboot)

Thanks!

Ryan

I gave up on Versamail early on. It works for some people; not for others. I also tried GopherMail and Snappermail (also very popular). I eventually went with Chattermail and an account on Fastmail and have had zero problems (but I also don't really need "push" email the way I had it on my Blackberry) I use Chattermail to get emails from my POP3 account, my Gmail account, and two Hotmail accounts.

I think the "must have" apps depend on what you use your Treo for. If you like, I can give you the names of the apps I use and why I decided on those and not others.

yes, I would like to know what apps you use. About to send my keyboard back, the thing did the looping reboot again. I might take versamail all the way off before the loading the keyboard driver one last time. I am fedup with this thing. I can't believe they sell this saying it works for the Treo. iGo my a$$!

I’ll start with Kelly’s list (if that’s OK?) to indicate which of those apps I have, or which alternatives I have chosen, and then add the remaining apps I have installed:

• Cell phone (duh!)
• Contact list (names, addresses, phone numbers, email, etc...)
• Daily organizer (Datebk6 + 2Day) (I still use Calendar)
• Internet surfing (still trying to find a decent alternative to Blazer)
• Reading and modifying Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents (Documents To Go) (I purchased DTG but it gave me so many reset problems I dumped it and purchased MobiSystems Office – which has performed flawlessly from Day one)
• Reading Adobe PDF documents (Docs To Go) (I use PalmPDF)
• Send and receive email (Snapper Mail) (Chattermail with an account at Fastmail)
• Photo viewer (Splash Photo) (AcidImage Standard)
• MP3 player (Pocket Tunes) (Pocket Tunes Basic now; may upgrade to Pro)
• TV grid listings, with 7+ days of listings, ratings, reviews, cast lineups, and the ability to add audible show reminders to my organizer (Pocket TV Browser + TV Grid Listings)
• Weather forecaster including regional weather maps and satellite views (4Cast) (I use wunderground.com – excellent!)
• Time sheet, with the ability to export data to Excel (SDS Time) (TimeSheet)
• Note taker - you can write with a stylus right on the screen, as well as add alarms (Diddlebug) (same here; also tried Sketcher – more basic than DB)
• Memo list
• To-Do list
• Encrypted password organizer (SplashID)
• Diet and exercise stuff - record your weight, daily caloric intake, and exercises, complete with nutritional and weight targets and charts (Diet & Exercise Assistant)
• Google maps - just like the web-based version, you can view street maps or satellite/map overlays, get step-by-step driving directions, and navigate by tapping and dragging the map display (same here; awesome – especially when you show people the satellite-view of your house on your PDA. NB – needs lots of free RAM)
• Directory assistant - look up phone numbers and addresses, including reverse lookups (Directory Assistant + Genius)
• Access the entire Wikipedia online encyclopedia in seconds, automatically formatted for the Palm's screen (Quickipedia)
• Shopping lists (Handyshopper)
• Complete dictionary and thesaurus (BEIKS)
• Camera
• E-book reader (eReader) (MobiPocket)
• Complete NLT Bible (MyBible)
• Video and movie viewer (TCPMP) (same here – awesome! I purchased PocketDVD-Studio and it is good, but TCPMP is easier to use. I use it with FairUse Wizard 2)
• Gaming - I have almost a dozen games including Bike or Die, lunar lander simulator, golf, tennis, bowling, auto racing, poker, and solitaire (Not really into games but I do have SkyForce and a bunch of little time-wasters like Die Roll, Mine, BlackJack, Connect-4, Pegged, Solitaire, and Twizzle. )
• Calculator
• Loan calculator (Loan Calc)
• Converter (convert any units to other units - temperature, weight, etc...) (Unit2Unit)
• Record voice memos (or record meetings) (I just bought CallRec. Love it! Can be set to automatically record all your outgoing and incoming calls; take notes, etc.)
• PowerRun gives me the ability to run applications from the SD card (I use ZLauncher – does many, many things that I wouldn’t otherwise attempt as a non-techie)
• RSS readers - I'm trying out Resco News and Quick News to see which one I like better

I also have the following installed:

BatteryGraph – very comprehensive tracking for battery usage, remaining power, etc.

Blue Pill – allows you to send a “kill pill” to your Treo via a secret text message if your Treo is stolen or lost – anything from showing the “Owner Info” to doing a complete hard reset and wiping your SD card of all data!

BuySmart – compares x widgets at x cents a pound to x thingamabobs at x cents a pound – which is the better deal? Great for supermarket shopping.

Counter – just adds up stylus taps to keep track of how many things you’ve counted!

dbScan – cleans up corrupted database files

flushIt – deletes useless files

Gas Control 2 – keeps very comprehensive data about gas mileage, etc. for all your vehicles

GridLock – love this one! Uses non-text security password to lock your Treo

KBLights – gives you total control over your keyboard lighting

Metro – awesome freeware program! Lets you use the public transportation system in over 350 cities around the world. You have to see this one to believe it.

Mundu Radio – streaming internet radio. Use Shoutcast listings to add your favorites from all over the world.

NotifyMe – gives me a LOUD audible warning if my SD card is ever accidentiall removed from the slot. Similar to CardPuke. ;)

NV Backup – back up EVERYTHING on your Treo , manually or automatically, to an SD card

RGR Switch – gives me a visual indicator to remind me that the “Silence Everything” switch is on

TreoMax – allows total control over how long your backlight stays on

VoiceDial – another awesome program well worth purchasing. Gives AUTOMATIC voice-dialling control over EVERY telephone number in your address book!

VolumeCare – lets you control the volume of your ear speaker, back speaker, microphone, headset, etc. Definitely increases the volume levels on the Treo that everyone complains about.

Hope this helps a bit! :)
