What is the best way to do this? I heard something about rusting it and steel wool and oil bu details were left out. Can anybody please shed some light on this? Thanks for the help.

If you are talking about a patina, everybody has their favorite way to age it. All of them work and all look a little different. My favorite is to boil it in water with walnut hulls for a half hour. Gives a nice blue black color and rustproofs the thing. Wear gloves unless you want black hands for a few weeks.

I know that some people will stick the blade in a jar of mayonaise or rub it with a lemon,I even heard of a guy that pissed on the steel to make it rust some. Are you looking to color the blade or give it that used and abused look like Daniel Winkler(who won;t give up his secret formula fr doing this that I have heard of)
Hows the Damascus knife coming along and will the small pieces I sent you work for your project..

Hey Bruce I guess my email wasnt sent out to you. I hate it when this happens, I'll drop you a line though. Yes I am trying to get it how his knives look. I saw an article in knives Illustrated about him and liked the look of his antique finish knives. I guess I'll just experiment with the Damascus knife made by you. Yeah right. I couldnt think of anything worse than that. Anybody else have any ideas?

Sorry Charles. I looked and don't have any pictures. I really didn't start taking them until I started posting here. It's an old trick, we used to do our steel traps that way to kill the scent and keep them from rusting.

It gives it a dull blue black. If you have ever run across a very old butcher knife, the finish is much the same.

Peter,is this Black walnut shells or just regular walnut shells that you are using..I have been wanting to try this on curly maple and stag..
Do you think it would work. Also do you think it would work to vaccume tank this type of stain and get it to penetrate all the way through some wood.
You could try it on the one I sent you to grind out yourself Charles.

Formula for a rust brown finish. 1part nitric acid 1part hydrochloric acid 12 parts distilled water. Use with caution...If you don't want to use acid use horse urine,....

Bruce I always used the hulls,
the green outer part when they
fall from the trees not the shells.
It dies deer hide realy well.

Thanks,I will watch for someone that has a Black walnut tree growinin there yard and see if I can pick up some of the outer hulls. Will pecans work like the wALNUTS ? People around here have a lot of Pecan trees but I don't know of any Black Walnut trees close by.But I will look.

Bruce, pecan that I can`t
tell. But if it was me I
would give it a try you
never know. When I was
running a trap line I used
logwood to dye my traps

COOL.... It is the right time of the year for these also, they just fell from the trees a month or so ago and there are stll some in teh trees. This will be interesting to se what happens.
Thanks,
Bruce

Sylvester's right Bruce. I use the whole thing (Black walnut). I collect them and wait until they turn black before using. It should work well on wood. It sure stains everything else. One of the added benifits on steel is that it "Rustproofs" it. I have never had anything rust after that treatment. I also add a little parafin to the stuff when it's boiling. When you pull the steel out it leaves a thin coat that never really goes away.

Thanks Guys,I will give it a try as soon as I can round some up,I know I can get the Pecans but I am going to look for some walnut also..
