Hi Guys
I'm intrested inpurchasing a folder that can be used as a thrower ....any ideas?

also which fixed blade(s) are regarded as good throwers?

Thanks

Throwing knives are known to be good throwers (duh)

Get a good folding knife and conceal a thrower in your boot :)

First of all, 4Arm, welcome to the Blade Throwing forums. I think you'll find most of us here are actually helpful, previous posters notwithstanding.

I'm sure there are some folders that can be thrown well...but I'm out of my comfort area here. Generally, an inexpensive folder is not going to withstand the abuse that throwing will impart on the total knife: throwing is very hard on the actual blades. That said, there are some very expensive and well-crafted folders that should theoretically throw very well--but do you want to risk throwing serious money at wooden targets? Most people wouldn't.

As for fixed blades, one of the best all-around fixed blades that can repeatedly be thrown well, and is fairly inexpensive, is an old-fashioned Kabar. Other fixed blades can be thrown, but that doesn't mean you want to throw them, or should throw them. One bad throw can bend, chip, or damage the blade very badly.

That said, consider throwing some cheap throwers, get your throwing style down pretty well, and then experiment under controlled/safe conditions with a Kabar.

Just get some cheap throwers and cold steel or hibben throwers. Folding knives should not be thrown because they will break. No folding knife is strong enough to be used as a thrower.

actually, I've thrown an older cold steel voyager many many many times and haven't hand any blade play or problems with it (surprisingly). I've broken a minute point off of the tip (clip point), but put it back with a file. If you are going to throw a folder, buy one with the intent of screwing it up. I would get one of the older cold steel voyagers, a clip point one. I would go with a lockback, but I don't throw folders much ever anymore. After purchasing the McEvoy book at the beginning of high school, I got over the mall ninja fantasy of using a throwing knife in a self defense situation, especially a folder. It just doesn't work.

It might change though if we got invaded by zombies or pirates.

An extrema Ratio folder should be able to hold up to throwing.
My friend has a CRKT M18-04 that he has thrown with no damage, it has a robust tip.
I throw my Busse and Swamp Rat Fixed blades, but I dont take the chance of throwing more than one at a time, as I dont want to roll the edges from metal to metal contact.

My friend refuses to give up that same fantasy. :jerkit:

I have a Glock 78 Field Knife fixed blade that can also be used for throwing. I have thrown it some but i didnt really know what i was doing so i stopped.

I have a big soft hay bail for expensive knive, like Rat's listed above. Normally they shouldn't break at all anyway, but I like to keep em perty. I practice with the hay bail (it has a bit of hay at the bottom as well, if they fall off) and get used to the feel of the rotation. Thats what I have done with my mineral mtn white river bowie, I still barely throw it. (I'm a wimp, I stick to beating up my CS pro flight throwers)

I have to hand it to Rat Fink though.....throwing a swamp rat, I would be afraid to, they are just so darn perty. (I know they can take it :D )

buy him a spear gun, or one of those old school cia spring loaded knives, and tell him to cary that and get over it. OOOOOORRRRR

THIS IS what I did to a neighborhood kid back in HS when he would keep saying...yeah no one is gonna mess with me after they see this. (the rotational throw he got pretty good at) I took a board and put it up on a rope hanging from a tree and moved it around and had him throw at it. The only thing he hit was the brick wall 40 feet behind it

then I said...now do it in a high stress situation. He shut up

I'd say that handle pins would be the first ones that fail then handle slabs will break and then a pivot pin. It shouldn't take more than 100 throws, especially if you miss every third one;)

get the cheapest lockback folder you can find and toss it around a bit, that way you will not ourn when it breakes.
