Hi guys. My shop got shut down by the city (cause they are evil), and I have not had the opportunity to forge anything in a while. I need a buddy with a shop

Anyone here in Eastern Iowa, or pretty close?

I got my BA at UNI. Then my doctorate at Palmer in Davenport, but I'm in Michigan now, and besides, I have no forge. Why do you keep saying that the city shut down your shop? Were you doing things you aren't zoned for? Were you pissing off neighbors or being otherwise obnoxious? I lived with people who did lots of forging and all sorts of medieval combat reenactments and the law never once had a bad thing to say about it. What's the story?

I had a blacksmith shop in my back yard. Literally nobody could see it from any of the surrounding properties, and as I knew all them, I am completely confident that they were all ok with it. The problem is that Cedar Falls has two full time inspektors that go around and literally walk around people's property making sure everything meets the asthetic standards, and if not, they can give you notice to change it. There are over 2000 rules on how your property must look, and failure to comply can lead to heavy fines and possible home confiscation. I hate living here, as pretty as this city is, I can't stomach the elitist politics.

Des Moines has similar city authority, and occasionally uses it. But in my limited notice it's been applied at real eye sores (cars on blocks in the front yard, etc), not against someone's non-visible back yard. Sorry to hear you've had such bad luck.

Thought I had an address for a guy near Fairview, but can't find it and cannot remember his name...I think it's the water. I'll keep looking and let you know if I get it.

Meanwhile, good luck getting set up again.

I gave a guy advice over at Netsword about how to make a super easy portable forge and anvil using an old wok/pot/sink, some fire clay, a few bits of pipe and whatnot, then using a 15-20 pound block of untreated 1095 or something similar as an anvil. I think I may try doing this as soon as I am able. I really want to start forging again...
