I'm about to leave the military and move back to the east coast. Some friends of mine hunt boar with dogs and kill them by hand. Has anyone here ever made a knife specifically for the quick kill purpose?? I could use input on length, width, thickness. I have a chris reeves green beret that I'd believe would do the job but I've been told that 8" is probly better. I'm also replacing all production knives w customs so plan to sell that in the future or pass it on to another soldier. I'm open to all input, criticism, just be gentle. I asked this on another forum and was talked to like I was a 5 yr old. Needless to say I haven't been back there.

I made 2 knives specifically for Hog Hunting in Texas. Thin stock, long (8-10" Blade) and sharp on both sides. These were very crude but did the job perfectly.

I prefer something in the 8" blade range. I also think something without a Choil or any other design feature that may hang between ribs. If you need to stick the boar more than once you don't want to have your blade hang up and cause a delay in a quick clean kill. I also like a sharpened clip, not just a false edge. I want that sucker to shave. You are trying to cause mass hemorrhage to facilitate a quick kill. The more vessels severed the better. I also want the handle design to allow for easy removal. Perhaps even a subhilt design or at least some hook down at back end with some swell.

Anyway that's my personal preference and reasoning having been the one sitting on the boar and putting some steel in its ribs.

WARNING: don't watch this video unless to want to see the slaying of a feral pig!

Haha, yeah! At least not without a warning! Granted I'm not one who is offended by it, but understand that not every knife collector is a hunter or agrees with it.

cool video, though!

The local boys I hunted with on the Big Island used a single blade folder and cut the jugular. The first time I ever saw anything like it was my first hunt with them. Man what a racket. We were in grass that was 6-10 feet tall. Dogs, pig and two hunters all wailing away only a few feet from me and I still couldn't see a thing. When I finally got into the foray there's a fella on top of the pig with a knee and a hand on its shoulder while two dogs have it by the ears and the other guy has it stretched out by a rear foot. The guy on top reaches into his pocket with his "free" hand and pulls out a folder. Uses his teeth to open it and proceeds to dispatch the boar. Up until that point I thought it was loud. I was mistaken. It got ultrasonic then.

Anyway, the guys I've done a little hunting with on Oahu use stickers. One fella carries about a 10" blade as he also uses it for occasional bush whacking while hoofing it through the brush.

Have you seen Ban Tang's Tigress?

I always thought the blade shape of the Linder folding bayonet looked like it would be a cool pig sticker.

Very nice Big Rick! Looks perfect for the task or just to admire. You could also use one of the great knives Ralph "Bud" Richards has made for you. I know he would be pleased to hear about the adventure.

Lon Humphrey made this pig sticker for me

It is made for one purpose and one purpose only.
It is the perfect tool and slices through pigs in order to get as clean a kill as possible.
Both edges hair popping sharp.
I could not have asked for a better tool for the job.

What an emotional thread boys. I think if I were to hunt pigs with a knife I'd want a lanyard and both front and rear guards so in the heat of the battle sliding around on the grip wouldnt be a concern. mmmmmmmmmmbacon!

I have hog dogs and have seen this done many times

You do not need a super long blade but I would want something longer than 7 1/2

I like a full guard but a half would suffice

The reason knives are popular is that when you are using dogs you do not want to risk injuring one while using a gun or bow and I guess some people like to stab things :)

I have had to use knives to finish off animals and I do not enjoy it but to each his own

Wow that pig got quiet real fast in the video. When ever I see a 6 inch cold steel ti light I think pig sticker.

nice rednose pit in that video, looked bigger than the pig itself.

at this point my only question would be, what kind of blade would one would need to kill this pig...
