Just curious to see if anyone has had an legal problems with wearing neck knives. I personally haven't run into any trouble with the law dogs. I suppose a lot of them being 2 or 3 inch blades, they might not consider them a big threat.

So, Any trouble?

I would think that that would have to do more with the local laws than anything else. If no law says you can't carry a fixed blade, or blade over X", or a concealed knife I wouldn't see any problems.

Here in NY you can carry any knife up to 4" as long as it is concealed, no distinction for folder or fixed. I have carried neck knives under my shirt with no problem, now if I were to were open that would be another story.

Your profile doesn't list what State you reside in so its pretty much impossible to get an accurate response. Some local laws prohibit concealed fixed blades, some have maximum blade lengths, some don't care.

So you HAVE to conceal it? That's the opposite of most states. That's interesting. :D

I'm in Maine.

Our laws say:

No person may display in a threatening manner, or wear under his clothes or conceal about his person, any firearm, slung shot, knuckles, bowie knife, dirk, stiletto or other dangerous or deadly weapons usually employed in the attack on or defense of a person, unless excepted by a provision of law. [1985, c. 478, §2 (new).]

The provisions of this section concerning the carrying of concealed weapons do not apply to: [1985, c. 478, §2 (new).]

1. Permit issued. Firearms carried by any person to whom a valid permit to carry a concealed firearm has been issued as provided in this chapter; [1989, c. 917, §3 (amd).]

2. Disabling chemicals. Disabling chemicals as described in Title 17-A, section 1002; [1985, c. 478, §2 (new).]

3. Hunting knives. Knives used for the purposes of hunting, fishing or trapping as defined in Title 12, section 7001; [1985, c. 478, §2 (new).]

Ask a lawyer who understands weapons law in your state. That law, like many others, is intentionally vauge, probably so the cops can arrest you whenever they want to.

NY concealed is allowed? I'm not so sure about that.

Regardless, I am enjoying wearing oriental style neck knives out in the open, swinging in the breeze - knives like my Hartsfield Kozuka or RJ Martin Kozuka. They just look so cool besides being sharp and quick.

The more tactical ones I tend to keep concealed, as they are not as decorative or simple in outline and definitly look sinister ...

Interesting, here, knife laws allow you to carry neck knives, but not concealed (without a permit). There's also no blade limits and single edge only is allowed, so a huge bowie knife strapped to your leg is fine, but a 2 inch, double edged boot knife could get you arrested. Of course, while legal, an openly carried neck knife is probably not the best idea in most areas, simply for the negative attention it will doubtlessly call.

NY law is basically that as long as it is not a switchblade, gravity knife, dagger, dirk, or other "deadly weapon, plus under 4" you can carry it legally. Strange but true, it must be concealed. It baffels me as to why they would do this, when most states disallow concealed carry.

In CT you are not allowed to carry any fixed blade knife unless actively involved in hunting or fishing. Our folders must be less than 4" in blade length.

I like a neck knife when fly fishing & wearing waders.

Are you guys sure about the NY law? At the last November NY Knife show they had posted at the show's entrance a brief outline of the knife carry laws. If I remember right, it says that fixed blades must not be carried out in the open nor in an easily accessible manner on your person. That easily accessible part could be interpreted alot of ways, but the intent is probably to bar it from being easily whipped out as a weapon (which open carry would presumably do also). But I'm not certain of my recollection of the wording.
