Any thoughts on the Spyderco Harpy?

Hey, I'm new here, so excuse me if I'm asking a question that has already been answered. I did a search on 'spyderco harpy', but turned up no matches except brief mentions of the knife in passing.

As I've been looking around newgraham.com, and the knife has caught my eye, I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this knife, and if they have any comments/criticism to offer that I should consider if I'm interested to buying it.

Thanks in advance.

I have two, a "work" one and a "nice" one. They are very stout, though as in all knives the very tip can be a little fragile.

It's a little wider than some knives and the Stainless handle one is a little heavy. All that being said I really like them, I use mine when working on the house, cutting plastic sheeting, rosin paper, fiberglass tape, scoring drywall, etc.

The technique for cutting it a little different due the shape of the blade it work best when you get something in the "sweet spot" curve.

Also it's not a saw, so it will dull fairly quickly if used in that manner.

I'd look for th G10 handle model, I think it would be grippier than the stainless handle model. A good value I bought mine for between $40 and $50, but if not used they are a little expensive.

A good solid work knife, not really for office carry or polite tea parties.

Edit to say I think the G10 Harpy is now discontinued.

I have a Harpy, and it cuts like crazy. I don't have a lot of call to use it, so I don't carry it that much. However, it's unbeatable for cutting cardboard, fiber board and the like. I personally prefer the steel handled Harpy, rather than the FRN handled Merlin, because I consider the Harpy to be much sturdier.

Harpy or Merlin, great choice. I have a plain edge Merlin with a Zytel handle. I absolutely love it. I use it extensively and it can handle most chores as well or better than a standard blade may in some cases. Just takes some getting used to and familiarizing.

The G-10 Harpy is a class above the Merlin but both are great cutters.

Also look at the SpyderHawk if you want something a bit bigger.
