Any Unix (IRIX) Cad freaks out there?

I hope there's a few... I picked up a SGI O2 Workstation last week and want to do some 2D CAD stuff with it. I've been using the MAC (Illustrator) for this and a vector graphic illustration programm just don't cut the mustard.

The SGI machine is running IRIS 6.5 and has a 175 Megaherz R10000 processor with 512 MB RAM. 21 inch SGI Moniter etc. That ought to manage anything I think up.

Looks like the problem is that the user software for this thing is big dough, upwards of $5000.

Does anybody know of any software that will run in the IRIX environment that's suitable for 2D knife designs? I'm much obliged for any help and advice, as I have a big zero in UNIX experience.

Sorry never heard of it...I use AutoCAD for some of my designs..Mostly I hand draw them and import the trace over...I know it cheating but lots easier to do.

Hi Otha, thanks for the reply. AutoCAD is pretty much the industry standard CAD Program but I think the interface is crap. Plus I hate Windows and Co. UNix is a rock solid stable OS (chances are the server for bladeforums is running Unix)

I do all of my initial design work on the board too but once I've got most of the kinks out I like to refine through the model stage in the computer...less tracing paper wasted :-)

Here what info I got on short notice. If any more pops up I will keep U informed.

Alias Studio - initially IRIX based, now available for PC too. At AutoStudio level it is absolutely superb for any design - e.g. most car producers use it for concepts

Hi Otha, thanks for the information! I've heard of the Alias programs, I think the only drawback is their price... They usually have a flexlicense system which, ah, knowledable folks tell me are tough to krack. I would have to really raise my prices on the knives if I invest $10,000 for a computer program, or maybe I'll try and get BMW to buy a car design from me? But if it's an "automatic" would that make it a "switchblade" and only available to police and military.? :-)
