A friend of mine gave this to me. He says it works good but I want to make sure before I go to the bother of re-handling it. It's fairly wide, and it has a couple of mechanical pawls that look like they grab the wood and force the two halves apart.
So what do guys say re-handle or don't bother, it's just a gimmick???

My brother had one and didnt like it. If he still had it I would give it a try but he already gave it away.

those are some of the best splitting axes I've ever used.I once split 8 chord of hardwood by hand with one of those.Mine have the synthetic handles and not the wood one they have now.We still have 2 in our barn. They are heavy but well worth the weight. They're one of those "let the axe do all the chopping" sort of axes.

I used on once and it was lousy, caused a lot of jarring in my hands. It was handled with wood though, not glass. I'll stick with my monster maul.

As you can see, folks have very different tastes in mauls. I personally like the lighter GB maul. I find I can split as well with the GB as with the heavier mauls---and with less exertion.

I was given one of those to use by my FIL and it didn't work very good at all. Get a decent maul, thin it out some and you'll be much better off IMO. A wedge or two is a good idea too, it's amazing what power they have to split.
