I have never been to a big knife show... I would love to make it to the Eugene show this month... but,:( most likely can't swing it... :( )

I have read articles about rope cutting contests..... But what I would die... (not literally).. to see is.... :D :

Here's the situation... Invite the best custom makers in the biz to step into the "Steel Arena": No matter if they specialize in stock removal or forging... All of 'em pile into the arena... take up their stations, and.... using the exact same tools/materials, they have 2 1/2 hours to make the 'best' knife...

I was going to go into specifics here, but let's just assume they all have to use the stock-removal method for the first 'challenge'... Aside from that, let me know who you think would "win" and why!

Note: No KnifeMakers were hurt or killed during the filming of this program.

Also: Please don't tap on the glass, It may disturb the KnifeMakers.

And: PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE KNIFEMAKERS!

KnifeMakers: please let a few of us "edge-challenged" people reply first... I would like to see what others think...

(then Mayo, Hossom, and Simonich can have it out ! :) Cool)

2.5 hours? Are you crazy? That's about enough time for Mayo to pay his daughter to cut out some frames while checks through all the forums ;)

I think the Strider boys could probably hog out a pretty kick ass knife in that timeframe.

Yeah, but Mitch, I already mentioned Tom, Jerry and Rob... Mick and Duane are also a given....!!!! :) :D :)

One of these days when I'm heading down into Seattle from Blaine, we'll have to meet up for a brew and talk some s**t about cutlery!

Now... Who would win???

-Dave

Maybe you should come down to Eugene in a week and a half and watch the grinding contest. I think they only get 10 minutes to grind a blank. That'll give you a good idea of who could compete in Steel Arena.

Shoot me an email whenever you make it into Seattle!

~Mitch

Mitch, cool... I will definitely send an e-mail if I get down there anytime soon. Hey, I'm trying to respond to your "My Projct" feild on the bottom of your post... I use Aol, and it would not let me send a reply directly, so let me know if it works...

And anybody else here on the forums that has not responded... let's help Mitch out on this one...

Dave,

It might be the way I set that form up. I'm a total novice at webpage building and I put that thing together almost a year ago for an art class.

I think "Iron Custom Knifemaker wannabe" Mitch could come into the Steel Arena and get hurt :(:

Maybe in keeping with the Iron Chef theme, there should be a team of Iron Customknifemakers. Like Iron Customknifemaker Hawaii Tom Mayo. And Iron Customknifemaker Montana Rob Simonich. And there could be challengers to enter the Steel Arena - like Challenger Jerry Hossom. We could have an episode every weekend! And during the week we could have specials like "The Rise of Simonich" or "Onion, RAW!"

I think you could be on to something!

It is impossible.

2.5 hrs for an entire knife:eek:

Lets say you can get a blank done in 10 minutes. Ok now you have to heat treat the thing. Figure in 30 minutes for a snap temper then 12 hours for deep cryo now two draw cycles of two hours each. You are up to nearly 17 hours not to mention the time to craft a handle.

Well, it just occurred to me that it could be done but only with Talonite or Stellite.

So given the materials it would be a toss up between Rob and Trace.

I do not think you have seen "Iron Chef"!

But that is the whole point of "Iron Chef", They are expected to take raw ingredients and make them in 1 hour into Scrumtious dishes.

I have never never made a knife in my life except for kits... But I know it takes MUCH longer than 2.5 hours to make one.

Actually, I digress... I COULD make a knife in 30 minutes... it would be ugly as hell, wouldn't cut much more than butter, would give your fingers blisters while cutting said butter... but it WOULD be a knife.

As in "Iron Chef" They take ingredients and don't just make "food" they make culinary masterpieces! In an hour... up to five dishes!

I know that an experienced knife-maker could make a MUCH better cutting utensil in 2.5 HOURS than I could make in 2.5 MONTHS. THAT is my point. I would love to witness what a true knifemaking artist could do in a short period of time. ;) That would be COOL!!!

Damn, Shelby, I am Jealous! I KNEW you would have some good thoughts on this Idea.. Oh, did I tell you I tried your hamburger recipe? MMM!

Actually I have seen the show several times.

But without heat treating a knife is just a wierd looking peice of rusting metal.

Move the time frame to 8 hours and you would have a hit on your hands. I could make a very servicable knife in that time.

Hey, R.W. ...

I know it takes a lot longer to make a really good knife... I am just trying to have a little fun here with a 'wacky' post!

I totally respect what you guys do... It would take me a LOOOOONNGG time to make a decent knife, and then, it would probably be pretty damn ugly!

However, It WOULD be interesting to see what an accomplished knifemaker COULD do in 2.5 hours. To me, I would love to see what you guys could come up with...

I was thinking... no patterns, no heat treat, no this.. no that.. for us amateurs, I think it would be VERY fun to see :)

I think it would be great fun. You could give them a couple of days to make their knives but edit out the long boring parts for a televised show (who wants to watch steel temper?). With proper editing, you could show the creation of the blade, selection of the handle materials, and highlights of fitting/polishing. A commentary on why certain materials were chosen or why certain methods were used would add to the show.
