Anyone know of a knife show in Seattle soon?

I live in seattle too, it would be nice if there was a knife show.

There's a small show in Puyallup. There's another small show in tacoma. There's a big show (OKCA) in Eugene, OR.

The knife show in Puyallup will be held in conjunction with the monthly gun show at Puyallup fair grounds.

The dates for the show are Oct 4-5. I know of two makers from Montana coming to the show. There is usually a good turnout of local makers. Makers I know that will be at the show are:

Todd Begg
Peter Bramly
Lyle Brunckhorst
Ed Caffrey
Jon Christensen
Bill Cottrell
Roger Dole
Tom Ferry
Lindy Lippert
Lonnie Hansen
Will Stegner
Nick Wheeler

A few comments about the makers above.

Todd Begg - Todd is going places. I love his knives. Order your knife from him now before everyone learns about him and he stops taking orders.

Peter Brahmly – I’m sure I spelled his name wrong. Peter received his ABS Journeyman Smith rating at Blade 2003.

Lyle Brunckhorst – Lyle has been making knives for a long time. He makes knives and teaches knifemaking at his shop in Bothell WA. He also hosts a great hammer-in that gets better every year. Knife collectors are invited to the hammer-in.

Ed Caffrey – Ed is an ABS Mastersmith who just retired from the military and now is a full time maker. Ed is one of the best.

Jon Christensen – Jon received his ABS Journeyman Smith rating at Blade 2003. He was also the recipient of the Peck Award. The Peck Award is given to the maker who submits the best Journeyman knife. Jon was also the winner of the rope cutting contests at the 2001 & 2003 Montana shows. His knives are super clean.

Bill Cottrell – Bill has been making knives for a while. This will be his first show. Bill is one of the inventors of Timascus. I have one of Bill’s knives sitting on top of my computer monitor. It is my dedicated damascus letter opener.

Roger Dole – Roger was one of the makers we asked to make knives to introduce Timascus. He makes both fixed blades and folders.

Tom Ferry – Tom won Best Fixed Blade Damascus at the BAKCA show last month. The damascus pattern was koi swimming in lily pads. Tom is known for his damascus and as one of the inventors of Timascus. Tom won the cutting contest at the last Puyallup show.

Lindy Lippert – Lindy makes nice stock removal fixed blades. This will be his first show. I can’t wait to see what he brings.

Lonnie Hansen – Lonnie is best known for his traditional tanto’s (with killer hamon) and his hand forged 52100 tomahawks. By hand forged I mean he beats a billets of 52100 into shape with a full size 10 pound sledge hammer! Lonnie is at the show on Sunday only. My list of future purchases include a tanto and tomahawk from Lonnie.

Will Stegner – Will has been making knives for many years. Some of the first custom knives I looked at were Will’s. His quality is top notch but his prices are extremely reasonable. Most everything gets marked SOLD very soon after the show opens. Will is also one of the top Talonite makers.

Nick Wheeler – What can be said about Nick. He is ugly as a toad and his knives are junk. Just kidding! Reverse the last two statements 180 degrees to get a good description. Nick’s biggest two problems are; 1) Too many people want his knives, and 2) Nick will not deliver a knife until his obsessive-compulsive anal-retentive quality control is happy. As a customer, I can live with problem number two.

I’m a lucky guy to be able to call most of these makers friends. :)

Oh, I am so there! Since I'm new to the area I still can't pronounce "Puyallup" properly, but I can find the place. But where in Puyallup is the show exactly?

Also, when is the Eugene show? I hear that's a good'un.

And when/where is the Tacoma show?

Follow the crowd (and the signs) to the Puyallup fairgrounds off hwy 512. There will be a bunch of folks headed that way. Three bldgs. of guns and one of knives.

The fairgrounds are in downtown Puyallup on Meridian, probably S. Meridian at that point, (I go through there all the time and don't look at the signs). It's the valley area between North Hill and South Hill, which are areas (not cities) Meridian passes through. If you're on Meridian, you can't miss the fair grounds.
I've always said Pew-Al-up (Al as in the man's nickname), but Pew-all-up, is used too. Emphasis is on the middle syllable. Poo-yall-up or Poo-yAl-up is the most common mis-pronunciation. Way more than you probably wanted to know about this topic.
This is a small show, but worth seeing, and it will prime you for the big-un (no, not like Al Bundy speaks of) in Eugene this April. Picture the big room (plus) of the gun show filled only with knives--that's Eugene. The smell in part of the gun show area of the Puyallup Fairgrounds usually goes away by late winter (doesn't bother those of us that live in dairy country). The Fair just ended as you probably know.

By the way, most if not all (a couple names I'm not real familiar with--my shortcoming not theirs) the makers on Chuck Bybee's list are absolutely "top drawer" in the quality of their work, so a small show doesn't mean lesser quality.

The Puyallup show is put on by the NorthWest Knife Collectors, a non profit club. There will be 100 tables and lots of great customs, antique, and the latest production models available for sale/trade. The show may be small but the quality is high. Fun is guaranteed. Check out the website:

Come out and join us, you won't be disappointed.
P.S. At our last spring show (the little one) we had over 20 custom makers including new ABS Mastersmith Bruce Bump. Bob Lay is also a regular. The Oct. show is our "big" show and will include custom maker awards, forging demos, and a rope cutting contest.

I will be going over for the show. It will be my first knife show and I look forward to meeting some of you.

I can't wait! Except - what a lousy time to be unemployed. Sigh. Well, I'll bring some goodies to trade perhaps. People did that regularly at the Oak Lawn show outside of Chicago, so I hope that's kosher in (speaking slowly and carefully) Pyew-AL-up. I'll be the slightly heavy guy with black hair, goatee & glasses, looking sadly at all the beautiful knives he can't have.

I talked with one of the regular gun table holders today, and he said that they (WAC) haven't had their regular monthly show for 2 months, due to the fair and all...So there are folks with show withdrawals, and they expect a LOT OF PEOPLE.

As far as I still know, there is going to be a forging demonstration where many of us table-holders will get a chance to go outside and pound on hot steel. It should be a lot of fun.

Raymond Richard, a regular on the forums here, is planning on attending too I believe. He does some cool stuff, so be sure to check him out.

As for Chuck....you know what they say, "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull-$hit." But hey, what can you expect from a guy who stays up as late as I do getting ready for knife shows?!?! (and makes his family HELP!) Just kidding...the Bybee's are GREAT people, be sure to chat with them! Well, Brenda and Jessica anyway.... :p

Looking forward to it, I hope you get a chance to come by and check it out!!!

Nick

Im going to miss you guys this year! I suppose my niece will never talk to me again if I dont go to her wedding. Have fun and post some show pics.

I am posting for Todd because as we speak he is in the shop slaving away on a couple of knives for the show........at least thats what he says he is doing out there...........

Anyway, You are a sweetie Chuck. I for one completetly agree with using child labor to further the family buisness, I have the boys chained to various machines right now!!!

And you fella's out there, you know who you are, don't forget about the cookout at our place sat. after the show.

See you there.

Tanya

Bruce, I guess that's a good excuse. We'll miss you, you add a lot of class to our show.
Tanya, keep a leash on the boys, at least Todd anyway. The sons love to volunteer to watch your table for you but tend to sell your stuff deeply discounted :)
I have it from a reliable source that Ed Caffrey and Ed Schempp will be attending too. If Ed enters the rope cutting contest I'm afraid the competition will be for 2nd place.

Tanya, isn't it great that child labor laws don't apply to family?!? Seriously, I would be lost without help from Brenda and Jessica.

Mike, Jon Christensen beat Ed Schempp in the cutting contest at the Montana show. Ed cut too high and went through the duct tape which disqualified him.
