Anyone on the "Forum" refurbish "Kershaws"?

I have an old Kershaw "Vapor II" that I bought about 5-6 yrs. back, and have used
( and abused ) it everyday since.
I'm thinking about having it refurbished and "tweaked".
Anyone on the Forums do that?? ( I know it's kind of a "cheapie" folder, but it's been a constant companion)

Yes, I had thought of that, but possibly wanted to go a step further..........new angle on blade, new washers perhaps.........

Sounds like something STR might do... You could send him a p.m, or go to his subforum in Makers. I have a Vapor II also. I really like it

Yeah... I was gonna suggest STR, too. He's done some stuff for me. Really first-class work from a great guy.

I understand that it has some sentimental value but the shipping costs would about outweigh the cost of buying one new.

If it were me I would put the money into a new blade. Maybe some other Kershaw. Nothing saying you shouldn't keep the old one and put it away in a safe place.

Doing a quick search it looks like you can get one for around $26.00.

I am sure you can find someone to do the work if you are inclined to shell out for it.

I have a Kershaw Vapor. It sharpens up nice, opens fast and carries real nice. It fits my hand well and is a good cutter. For 20 bucks it is hard to beat for an EDC.

Just my .02.

Thanks for the input guys. I realize it's going to cost me about the price of a new one to fix the old one, but there's more to it than $$$. This knife has been in my pocket everyday for the last 6+ yrs., so "he's" a good friend.
I've contacted "STR", per the thread, and I think he's going to work out fine.

Nope, saw it fine. Contacted Kershaw, asked them about a "makeover" and they said there were "limitations". Since it looked like I had to jump through hoops, decided to pass. Contacted "STR", and he is going to do exactly what I want done, no "hoops", no hassle. As I said earlier, it's not about $$$ with this knife. I want to refurbish THIS knife, I know I could buy a brand new one cheaper, but that's not the point.

Gotcha.

Thomas W works for Kershaw, I'm sure he would take care of your knife free of charge. Oh well, you made your choice though.

Well, that wasn't mentioned in his post, and I haven't been around long enough to just "know" that. When I contact a company, and I start hearing "limitations" to what is supposed to be a free service, I'm a little put off. I made my request plain, that I wanted refurbish & re-sharpen. The reply I got back asked for clarification (??), and said there would be "limitations". At that point, I lost interest.......thinking they are either not going to do what I want, or.......they are going to charge for it. If that's the case, "STR" here on the forum has made me a very reasonable offer to do exactly what I want, so yes, I made my decision. It was also my first intent to go to Kershaw, because I'm very happy with the knife, but I would have much preferred either a "yes, we'll do it", or "no, you have to pay", the "limitations" thing to me just seemed like a put-off.

When they say "limitations" they're probably just covering their backsides so that they're not forced to refurb a knife which has been abused to ridiculous lengths. If they had to essentially replace the whole knife instead of just replacing the pivot and washers, sharpening the blade, etc, they would prefer to have a way out.

I've had a variety of contact with kershaw's warranty department (broken pocket clip on my hard use vaporII, broken torsion spring in my leek, some stripped screws here and there from using the wrong tool to take apart the knife) and they've always been absolutely great. That said, STR does some really sexy mod work on knives, and you'll have more freedom about what you can have done using him (regrind to a thinner profile, upgraded washers, re bead-blasted handles, etc...) that kershaw doesn't do as warranty service.
