Are BM Axis blades switchable?

I recently got a B 720 and I really like the handle but I think the blade design on the large Griptilian is generally more useful.

I was thinking that since these knives supposedly use the same "drop in" axis lock cartridge I should be able to acquire a Griptilian blade and do a swap (bye bye warranty) which would give me the best of both worlds.

The only trouble spot that I can think of is whether the 550 blade is able to clear the innards of the 720 handle. The handle is very open inside, so I think I can get away with it.

From the pictures I have seen the 720 blade looks remarkably similar to the one on the 551.

Thoughts or opinions?

I think that the location of the pivot point in relation to the axis lock would be the most important factor. If they are not the same distance aprt on both knives I doubt you could switch the blades.

I'm fairly sure that the pivot/axis assembly is the same on both knives. If it's not there is really no way to make this work.

I checked on the Benchmade site and they say that the Griptilian blade is .2 inch longer than the 720. Looking into the handle there is some clearance there but I'm not sure if there is enough.

If the moving assembly is indeed the same than there will likely be enough room between the blade edge and the backspacer. I'm more concerned about the blade tip fitting into the end of the handle.

If nothing else I have a friend named Dremel who can help me "extend" the amount of room in the handle.

If anybody has a plainedge full size Griptilian that you are willing to sell (or donate for the advancement of knife tinkering science)please email me.
