Is the jury still out on this one? Are assisted openers now considered switchblades or othwise considered illegal knives here in Texas or are they still legal asuming they are single-edged and meet the 5.5" blade length restrictions? I have read the penal code but it's the interpretation of the code and the precedents which may have been set in the courts that concerns me. I own a Kershaw Leek (3" single-edged blade ) assisted opener and would love to make it my EDC as long as it won't land me in jail.

No idea, it pretty much depends on the cop, the DA, and the judge and their personal opinions on the subject. I had one bozo (El Paso PD) that tried to tell me ALL Microtech knives are autos and that the (manual action) SOCOM I had on me was illegal. I handed him the knife and said go ahead and activate it if it is an auto, the retard tried for 20 minutes to find the auto button til I told him I'm late for work, arrest me or give me back the knife and let me go or I will file harassment charges. He let me go. Problem is alot of cops are pretty ignorant about knives and knife laws, if they think it's an illegal knife, that's enough to arrest you.

I'm in Cali and I'm not sure about the law on assisted openers but even if they were legal I'm sure there are way too many cops like the ones BVincent met who don't know the difference and is going cause too much problem then it is worth. A knife with a good flipper or wave mechanism is quick enough for me.
