Hey guys I'm new around here, but have been looking at the CS Hawk mod thread and have a couple of questions.

First off, I did search and didn't come up with anything so Im sorry as Im sure this has been discussed many times. But what is the best way to secure your axe/hawk head to the handle? In the CS hawk thread I see you take out the set screw, whats to keep the head from falling off? What actually keeps it on after that screw is gone?

Thanks guys! Maybe this can be formed into a sticky after some nice info is compiled to keep other noobs like me from asking a question like this.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

So you attach it by hammering the head from the top and it wedges I'm taking it? Is anything else used to secure it while also making it easily field removable?

I freeze the haft and warm the head and soak in linseed oil and beat the hell out of it with a 3 pound mall. It stays on most of the time.

I have a small camp axe, its a POS but I thought about modding it a bit. Its a Trouper and at the top it has a small insert ( for lack of the correct word and knowledge) its circle shaped. Would I have to pull that out before trying to get the head off?

No.
On a tomahawk, the head goes on from the bottom. You slider it up the haft until it stops (the haft tapers out at the top), and then give it a good beating to seat it in place. Centrifugal force keeps it in place when you swing. A lot of guys wrap paracord or rawhide under the haft to help keep it from getting loose and sliding back down the haft.

Perfect! Thats so much everyone! I am ordering a CS Trail Hawk tonight so hopefully I can post in the Mod your trail hawk thread in a week or two!

A good way to secure the head once it is set by sliding it on from the bottom of the handle and rapping the top of the handle where it protrudes from the head. Next use a thin piece of leather (very pliable) and wrap it around the haft above the head and and then across the head in a criss cross fashion and then around the bottom of the head. Secure the end with leather cement. The next step is to saturate the leather with super glue. When it sets it is similiar to rawhide that has been applied wet and dried. This makes it very hard not like leather at all. Your head is secure! The cold steel hawks come with a set screw through the back of the poll. In my opinion it should be taken out and not used. If you do tighten it to the handle and throw it the screw will gouge a channel in the wood and weaken the handle.
