For quite some time I have wondered about a simple thing that I think would improve all the knives that use a one hand opening disc.

What if the disc were incorporated into the thumb ramp allowing the thumb to rest on it.

For those of you who cannot visualize this picture the CQC-6. Lengthen the thumb ramp while decreasing its angle relative to the blade spine. You now have a ramp about 1/2" longer from the pivot but still rises to the same height from the spine. Now flush mount the disc into the ramp.

I feel that this would allow me a more secure sabre grip as my thumb would be less likely to slip off the blade.

Currently I regard the hole opener, peg opener, and disc opener as all equivelant. This change would make the disc a huge advantage when compared with those others though, as it would enhance the safety with no loss in function that I can see.

I am hoping that Bob Terzuola will respond to this as he is the originator of the disc opener and I wonder if he has ever considered this idea.

I know that all the Lightfoots, the ATCF, and Emersons in my collection could easily benefit from this simple change.

PLEASE- before responding grab your disc opener and ponder this...

The patent is available for a small fee payable in knives...

Hey Big... I tried the idea when I first invented the disc opener but rejected it because I didn't like the way it looked. Two reasons: the disc looked funny sitting on top of the ramp, kind of like a hat and second, I didn't want to extend the ramp and thereby change the proportions of the blade. But keep thinking up new ideas, you guys ultimately give me some of my best design features with your feedback. I'm not always smart enough to think of them but I sure am smart enough to know a good one when I see it!!!

So much for trading the for the patent. I guess I will have to keep BUYING my knives...
