federal law states in CHAPTER 29 - MANUFACTURE, TRANSPORTATION, OR DISTRIBUTION OF SWITCHBLADE KNIVES

That all the above mentioned is illegal. Did I read this wrong? can I buy/posses an auto knife? I see that we have them for sale on the forum but what does the restriction really mean?

I believe that federal law excludes freight from the transportation restrictions. It is therefore legal to mail the knife across a state border but not carry it across. I think this is stupid, but nobody really asked for my opinion did they?

There are virtually no federal restrictions on knives of any kind.

However, check the laws of your state, where most weapon prohibitions begin.

If you find no prohibitions for auto knives in your state, hit the library and look into municipal prohibitions.

Remember that most laws don't need to single out an auto knife--they can refer to them in subtle and vague ways. They may not rule out a particular knife, but can rule your particular knife out based on blade length limits, etc.
