Availability of Modified Kershaws?

I'm a big fan of Kershaw Knives. I have several of the KO Speed Safe knives, and happen to think they're the most clever thing to come along since the zipper.

The only trouble is that the ones I really like, and get alot of use from have less-than-great steel (440A). The leek I carried for a year in the desert held up GREAT, but required constant sharpening. I enjoy sharpening, so no big deal. But I would prefer one with better steel so I don't have to sharpen it 3-4 times a week.

I have seen the "Random Leek", and would get one in a second except for two facts: 1) They are 2.5 times more expensive than a leek. 2) They have a TiNi coating. Take out either one of those, and I would snatch one up.

Is there anyone out there "playing" with kershaws and making modifications like ones made by kershaw for CKT?

I love my soft metal, non-edge holding, middle of the road steel leeks dearly. But I wanna love 'em more! Hopefully I can find something befor my up comming return to the sandbox.

Kershaw's website says S60V for those two knives, not 440C. My knife (BOA) says 440V, which is S60V by another name/brand.

Interestingly, my carry knife, rainbow leek, just got swapped out to the BOA this week. The safety on the leek broke when I dropped the knife; the knife landed on the open-assist-tang and the blade opened up by bending the safety out of its way. After looking at how the safety works on the Leek, I now favor the BOA's safety design. Plus the steel is truly superior.

Now I just need a rainbow leek, with S60V/440V (probably not "rainbowable"), and the BOA's safety design! And make it with a 4-inch (or 3.987654321!) blade. For me, that would be the ticket.

The Boa certainly has some preformance advantages over the Leek. The concave blade design of the Boa make it problematic for my use. As for the length, the 3" Leek is perfect for me. I have an M9 bayonet as well as a BM 9053SBT if a larger blade is called for.

The leek is truely the perfect EDC for me, if only it had better steel without a coating. The coating is a real deal breaker. This is for a soldier's pocket knife. Opening MREs, cutting 550 cord, 100 MPH tape, carboard, that sort of thing.

I found that with the 440A Steel, one task might kill the edge. For that reason, I have to carry a pocket sharpening/care kit. It would be nice if I could leave that in my duffle for end-of-the-day use.
