Axe or Hatchet?

I have some wood that I need to cut. It's mostly oak about 6-8 inches in diameter. I can break most of it, but once it gets down to 24 inches I can't break it any further. It needs to be cut. I have a small hatchet. After several hundred cuts, it'll go through.

An axe would cut it, but I think hitting a 7-inch diamter log is just going to make it bounce.

Is there a good edged tool for this task, or should I give up and get a Husquevara?

If you only have a limited amount of wood to cut up & no real need for a powered chainsaw, buy an inexpensive bowsaw. A bowsaw will cut your oak to length a lot faster & with less effort than will a hatchet or axe.
