I plan on getting the Skyline to be my EDC knife and start my collecting with, but I want something that I can use as a back-up just in case something happens to the Skyline (lose it, breaks, stolen, etc.). I'm looking at knives (just Kershaw) like the Chive, Centofante, and the OD-2. Would those be good knives to be a back-up EDC? What would you suggest? What are your experiences with the smaller Kershaw knives? Price isn't really an issue so don't worry about that. Thank-You.

Scallion is my favorite smaller knife.

The Cryo is smallish and just out.

The Zing, tanto or striated, discontinued, so go get one.

Leek and Skyline are two of my favorite EDCs.... All the ones in the onion series look nice as well (Chive, Scallion, Leek, Shallot). I have a Chive, and its a nice little knife. Very fun to flip.

The OD-2 was my first kershaw. That little blade takes a crazy sharp edge. I loved the flipper system on it and wish it was incorporated on more of the KAI lineup. It is also inexpensive so should something happen to it maybe it wouldn't hurt so bad lol.

All that being said, I recently gifted a cryo and really liked it. Had some heft to it but I carry ZT knives so that doesn't bother me. I was so impressed that I can honestly say one will definately be finding its way into my collection as well.

All those sound fine. You would be happy with any of them, I'm sure. Do you want something similar to your skylines size, and shape? Or are you looking for something different? A chive, or scallion are different enough. My first kershaw was a camo scallion and I carried it alone for 4yrs. in my pocket as edc. Worked just fine! I think you would want the scallion over chive though, as it is bigger and fits the hand better. The chive is dang small! The 1450 saphire might be one to check out. Sexy, blue, and titanium! It could double as a gentlemans carry!

It really depends on what your back-up knife needs to be capable of. If you need it to be roughly as capable as a Skyline, I'd choose a Zing (especially being discontinued). If you're looking for a smaller companion knife, I'd choose the OD-2. It's my preferable secondary blade for EDC. Light, compact, and addictive (you'll love the over drive system so much you'll buy his big brother).

Get a Zing while you can. I have 3. Such a shame they discontinued them.

I carry a Chill as the backup to my Skyline, but I've also got a Leek for the occasional carry, too. The Cryo is on my list of knives to get, although I'm thinking about waiting for the Cryo II for the longer blade.

I like the chill as well if you are carrying 2 knives its great since it weighs very little and you can it around 15 to 20 bucks

Thank-You everyone. I really like the OD-2, and you guys seem to like the zing and chill so I guess I'll have to get all of them. :)

skyline is my main edc.. zt0550 used to be my back up... have to wait it to come back from ZT CS.

Here is the best advice I have ever been given on this forum, get whatever it is that you personally are leaning towards. Chances are the others are somehow magically going to find their way into your collection anyway so you might as well start with what you want.

Some people find out what they want isn't what they thought it was. That's why they do research and ask for opinions. My wife thought she wanted a Jeep Wranger until she saw the interior in person.

I never said not to do research, you are misinterpreting my post. I research anything I buy almost to the point of obsession, but after that research is done I go with what I am leaning towards when it comes to knives and somehow always end up with the other ones before too long. If you look through the topics here you will find I ask for opinions a lot in this forum and I do it because I respect the knowledge base and helpfulness that this forum is full of, but that doesn't change the fact that when it is all said and done and you have all of the information you can get.... you should go with what you are leaning towards.

Here's my problem with a response such as "get whatever it is that you personally are leaning towards": it provides absolutely no insight at all to the person asking the question. In this case, he is asking specifically for opinions on smaller Kershaw knives, one of which he wants to get as a backup EDC. He even cites 3 examples. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he wants to know if there is a specific knife that stands out from the group, or if there is something he should avoid. Even if there is one among all the choices that he is currently leaning towards, he doesn't want to make an uninformed decision based solely on aesthetics that he'll regret later. Thus, the post.

I don't mean to come down on you, and I hope that you don't take this personally, but I've read too many answers to questions around here that aren't answers at all. Another pet peeve of mine is the "best knife is the one I have on me" reply. That is probably the most useless response of all. It's a lazy, canned response sprinkled with a hint of elitism, and it does nothing to encourage or to teach a budding knife enthusiast. I'll stop ranting now...

Do as I do...have more than one Skyline. The orange one for casual bright style, and the brown/black one to match my khakis at work, as well as the standard black one for those days where I go with jeans and a black t-shirt. Ya know, back up options.

Also, don't discount the Cryo based on size. That thing can take a serious, serious beating.
