Sort of a WIP thread. i guess an abbreviated WIP thread. I always forget to take the before photos.

This is a Wetland blade (forget the exact model) that i got from Bill a few months back.

I drilled handle. Did the rough cut and pinned together to check it out. that's what the pic above is. sorry for the lack of photos of the previous steps.

i will be glueing this up and then doing the finish work.

Fiddleback Mahogany handle. Black micarta liner. Black micarta pins.

looks like you have a good start there.
one tip that it seems a lot of folks miss -- when gluing it up, make sure the "grain" of the pins lines up with the grain in the scales.

You got your pins! Looking good, bro.

lol. yessir! thanks to you michael. well...these are the black pins. think i got those from usaknifemaker. i didn't see that McMaster had those. BUT...i did get the brown. hope to use that on another project. thanks bud.

Looking good I like the rich color of the wood and looks like some nice grain too. How do you plan to finish her up any kind of stain or clear coat or just leave her el naturel ? I've never made a knife so not sure what every one does once the sanding's all done. I know some just buff em up and let em go. Wish I had a shop to work in it looks like a good way to relieve some stress after a day in the grind...

thanks blade. i didn't mention that the mahogany is stabilized. so, i will probably just leave her as-is once i'm done.

can't wait to see the finished product I'm subscribed so I can keep up with the process...that's one of the things I like about this forum ppl aren't afraid to share and knowledge is power and most ppl keep their ego's in check and can even share their mistakes so the rest of us can learn from it not a common thing in today's world of fake so called social sites

Looks good. I need to build the blade I got from Bill. Been busy with other knives. I need to get some of those pins to try. I've been using brass and mosaic.

Blade66, I just built a bench in the garage and put a few inexpensive grinders and a drill press on it. It doesn't a lot.

got some time today to work on 'er. and wow....i see some of these pics are pretty out of focus. sorry about that.

i took a ton of pics. rather than putting captions on each pic, let me just describe the process, then i'll just follow with all the pics.

this is the first handle i've done by myself. i did do another one with a local knifemaker. i decided it would be a good idea to just put the grinding wheel in the drill press. i couldn't always see what i was doing, but this actually worked out pretty well. started with 80 grit, but didn't like what that was doing (or wasn't doing). so, i upped it to 40 grit.

i then clamped it into a vice and used some files on it. that finished up the rough work.

i then wanted to clean it up a bit, so i put a 120 grit into the wheel.

i then viced it again and finished it up with sandpaper. 400 then 800.

i can see where i could have done things different. and i might go back and sand it up some more. but overall, i'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

on to the pics!

sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! man

thanks bill. but, the best part about this knife is still the steel. :)

i have had the privilege of being able to purchase custom knives from a handful of different makers over the last several months. and, i'll tell ya what....your edge is still the sharpest i have received "out of the box."

Great job... love the black micarta/mahogany combo. Also reminds me I have one of Bill's DIY blades here .
