I just got some SC 320 grit 2"x42" belts that have such a bump where the joint is it slaps the work away from the platten. Is this a common thing? I've only bought about a dozen belts so far. The 120, 220, 400, and 600 grit belts I have been using work real smooth.

I would say something is wrong with the belts. I use lots of 320 2X42 belts and they have always run pretty smooth. By the way, I notice you live in Lubbock, I have bought lots of 2X42 belts from Texas Tools in Lubbock and have never had any problems with any of them. Tom Lewis

check the joint...you may have gotten some belts that have an overlapped joint instead of a butt seam. belt slap is a common complaint with platen grinding, especially against a metal or graphite platen surface. this is often evidenced by wavy "snake trails" on the steel at finer grits. alot of people have achieved a smoother platen grind by affixing the pyroceram "glass" to the platen:

sometimes it helps to let a belt run for 15-20 minutes before trying to grind...helps to stretch 'em a bit and smooth it out.
good luck.

Matt,

If the seller is a distributor, call tell and talk it over. Your business puts money in there pocket. I had a problem with some 3M belts and spoke with the distributor that sold me the lot. They were replaced no charge. A happy ending.
