Balisong … Strongest of all folders ??

You know I’ve never conducted or have seen any test on balisong strength. However, it is my guess that the balisong is the strongest of all the folders. This alone makes it a tactical consideration. The rest is gravy.

Anyone know of some scientific testing?

If not it may be a good suggestion for Mike T. or Cliff or some other as I would like to see if my hypothesis is correct.

Well, they are strong, that's for sure. The only problem is that they are as likely to fail backwards as they are forwards. However, the balisong isn't really used in ways that would cause such a dramatic failure.

One of the reasons it seems so strong is that you can't inadvertently jostle or nudge it closed by incorrect hand position, as you can with a liner lock or a lockback.

I've got 3 footer balisong with 5 lbs myself, saw 5 footer bali here on this forum. Any lockback, linerlock sounds like a joke with them.

Well, locking mechanism is one thing, wielding them is quite another... by my little experience.

Showed my Balisong to a friend a long time ago and he just commented that it looked like it worked on the three point hitch system that a lot of farm equipment use, very very strong and practical. About like a fixed blade in strength, depending on the quality of knife you buy, Benchmades are tough little monkeys!

The Bali-Song is strong but, in most cases, not under lateral stresses. Logic would make one assume that since there are two pivots, the knife would be twice as strong in that area. This is true to some extent but since most Bali's use somewhat inferior pins and pivot systems, when compared to modern tactical folders, you would see failure much quicker under heavy use.

This is not to say that Bali's are inferior as there intended uses are much different. I have carried many Bali's and have nothing but praise for the concept and design. The new Benchmade's should be interesting since they use a pivot system never used before. I would be happy to test them in a future test but the Benchmade would most likely win in the production arena.

What I want to see is a quality Bali with some class and style but affordable. Hummm... Maybe that is an idea I already have in the works

Look for some soon!

I have an idea! Chuck can get all of his balis together and test the lock strength Cold Steel Style! hmm, wait, that would mean breaking them, , oh well

Mike,
I think the lateral strength is there as well in the better quality balis. Of course I am speculating. How a bout some testing ??? Someone call cliff
