Balisongs and NYC

Are they legal or not here in New York City? The website posted here on the pinned thread says that they are not classified as gravity knives, but some members do:confused: Thanks For Your Time!
 
Balisong/Butterfly knives are completely legal in NY State and NYC due to a ruling by a judge deeming that they are not gravity knives. However I believe NYC has ordinances against carrying them. (tony feel free to elaborate).

i'm pretty sure they are illegal, i'm in NYC myself, in NYC, anything that looks like a weapon is illegal.

Not trying to be a wet blanket, but, without even getting into NYC ordinances, the term "dangerous knife" is used several times in Section 265 of the NYS Penal Code, but never explicitly defined. This seems to open up a large "grey area" for interpretation by the police and courts. If the DOB you list in your profile is correct you may want to consider this, at least for the next few months:

Section 265.05 Unlawful possession of weapons by persons under sixteen

It shall be unlawful for any person under the age of sixteen to possess... ...any dangerous knife;...
...A person who violates the provisions of this section shall be adjudged a juvenile delinquent.

Regarding the more general question on the legality of balisongs in NYC, I would ask the question, do any reputable gun/knife/sporting goods stores in NYC openly display balisongs for sale? If so, this would be a pretty good indication that, at the least, the sale and ownership of same is legal there although it would by no means guarantee that carrying one "readily available for use" on your person (as opposed to transporting it home from the store in a sealed package) would be allowed.
 
Yes, my DOB is correct, I am 14. I just wanted to see about the laws (looking ahead). They are no firearm stores or sporting good stores that sell ANY knives around here. (only seen ONE)
 
A good place to drool is Paragon Sports. They won't sell to minors, but you can look :)
Broadway and 18th Street, Manhattan.
Custom & Production, very pricey too.
 
I love that place. Drooled at the custom fixed points for like an hour. (counter guy looked like he was goning to kick me out)
 
paragon sells balisongs?
there are plenty of places in chinatown that carry Jaguars, and other cheapies ~$15 or less
 
btw i was talking to a cop thats about to retire in 9 months, and he told me that balisongs are gravity knives, but he didnt seem to mind that i had one :)
