KWM,
3.5" Blade
8.5" OAL
0.25" Thick!
D-2
Reindeer scales
Bart's Mosaic pins
This is a joint effort at design. I looked at several different skinners, and thought about ones that I have used, and what I like to add or change, or combine. The biggest decision was metal. Rust Resistance vs Edge/Hardness. I decided that I would rather have a sharp knife that needed care/protection and cleaning/treatment than a stainless one that might not hold as good an edge. I have had to stop in the middle of skinning(Deer) operations to resharpen an edge. We decided on D-2. I wanted a thick blade. I intend it to be a skinner, but it will be the only blade I carry when I hunt, so I wanted a durable blade. Bart had showed me a knife that he had rehandled for someone, using his mosaic pins & I liked them. Bart sent me a picture of a knife that he thought was in line with the design I had described. I cut a portion out of the picture, brought the two remaining pieces together, changed the tip somewhat, and sent it back to him. In my original idea, I wanted Micarta scales. i intended it to be a user, with no concern for beauty. When Bart asked about Reindeer, my first impression was "No". "If it's pretty, I might be afraid to use it". But the more I thought about it, I remembered the skinners I have seen with stag/antler scales & how nice they look, but were still functional. So I agreed. Best decision I ever made. Now, I not only have one very functional knife, but a beautiful one too.
I have had several "Custom" knives, bought & traded for them, and traded away. But never have I had a knife custom made for me. As you might guess, I am kinda proud of this one. For a college student, Bart has talent as a knife maker. I hope to have success soon in the area of hunting, and will post a report on how well it serves in it assigned duties. Maybe I can post a picture of big buck?!
